Boxing coach predicts big things for talented young fighter

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says there are big things to come from young Lucas Ewan after taking bronze from the Schoolboy Tri Nations in Dundee earlier this month.

The Castlemilk youngster lost in his semi-final against Sparta ABC’s Thomas O’Reilly, who went on to defeat England’s Tom Connor and win the GB 52kg title.

Fellow Scot O’Reilly was ahead in the first round and to the surprise of Ewan’s corner, he was given a standing eight count in the second round, despite there not being a clear punch thrown.

However, O’Reilly then came at his opponent and when he forced a second eight count, the referee stopped the fight in favour of the Sparta boxer.

Coach Archie Durie said: “For Lucas to come through his first ever season and win a Scottish National title, then the Western District title, and get bronze in his first GB Tri-Nations is really like a gold to him.

“The experience he will take from this will do him so much good for next season.

“I have been very proud of our boy Lucas in this past year. He trains so hard, he gives 100 per cent on everything he does, and this isn’t the last you will hear from Lucas Ewan.

“There are big things to come from him.”
