And that’s about it for today’s clockwatch. It’s been another goodie with goals aplenty, some hefty one-sided scores, comeback wins, unlikely wins and, at the end of everything, Mo Salah scoring two goals again and Liverpool winning again.
Thanks for reading and for all your emails and comments. Have a peaceful Saturday evening taking in Wolves v Villa, having a beverage or even venturing on to the rugby. Until next time gang!
A golden day for Silva and his boys, Marco that is, who speaks to the BBC:
A great reaction from us. What a reaction. Very well played in the first 30 minutes of the second half, it’s not easy to do it against Newcastle. I believe that our first half was not so bad to be honest, one moment of individual quality makes all the difference.
Eddie Howe isn’t happy with Newcastle’s performance to lose at home to Fulham:
🗣️ Eddie Howe: "There were similarities to B’mouth & that was painful. We weren’t great athletically & on the ball we were wasteful. Put that together & it’s not a recipe for a great performance. We deserved to lose. The individual & collective levels leave me frustrated"
— Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) February 1, 2025
Liverpool’s Alisson Becker was all smiles as he reflected on a hard-fought victory at Bournemouth, speaking to Sky Sports:
It’s a great result that we have here away from home. We showed great desire, mentality and great quality to finish the situations that we created. Bournemouth are really intense. If you look to the data, they are the top of the tale for running, intensity – the way they play, they’re aggressive. You have to be focused and really sharp in every situation.
Some reaction is starting to dribble in, starting with Ipswich coach Kieran McKenna who is indeed in a rueful mood:
It’s an opportunity missed, another home game that we have lost late and we have had too many of those. We had the better of the game, the better of the performance but we didn’t take the win. There’s a lot of football to play and it’s a sore one to take but we need to make sure that we keep performing well. We need to work hard, respond in the right way and try and get stronger.
Southampton’s win at Portman Road means they are just two points off Derby’s record low tally. That’s something for the Saints to cling on to. Ipswich will rue a major opportunity missed today.
The latest in the Golden Boot standings – as one man stands above all others. Is anyone going to catch Mo Salah, or indeed Liverpool, this season?
Your 5.30pm (GMT) game could be a real good’un, a west midlands derby for the ages. Barry Glendenning has dusted himself down after MBM-ing a 7-0 earlier on and is all over it.
Louise Taylor was on Tyneside as Newcastle’s fans were stunned into silence by free-flowing Fulham.
John Brewin ventured to the south coast to see the Mo Salah show.
Andy Hunter watched Everton run all over Leicester.
Our roundup from Germany. It got a little very for both Bayern and Dortmund today, but they both bagged drei Punkte.
Given Liverpool lost at Bournemouth in the 2022/23 season – a low point at the time for Jürgen Klopp and a game in which Mo Salah missed a penalty – and the fact the Cherries have been in such sparkling form, today’s win will taste all the sweeter for Arne Slot. Salah stuck his spot-kick away and followed it with a curling howitzer.
The match reports will soon be dropping from our reporters around the grounds.

Other than Leeds’ 7-0 thumping of Cardiff, it’s been a quiet-ish day in the Championship. Coventry, who won 2-0 at Swansea, are starting to purr under Frank Lampard, Sheffield United stayed second with a hard-fought win at Derby while Burnley fell a little further back thanks to another goalless draw.
Of the bottom nine, only Stoke have won today, a 2-1 comeback victory away at lowly Hull.
There were some dramatic finishes in League One. Birmingham’s comeback win over Rotherham, coupled with Wycombe dropping two points at Cambridge, means the Blues are now four points clear with two games in hand.
Wrexham thought they’d been denied by Crawley only for Elliot Lee to head home a 95th minute winner for the Welsh side, who now sit in third. Fourth are Stockport who clinched a very impressive win away at Leyton Orient. Shrewsbury got a big win over Mansfield to boost their survival chances.
Full time scores in the Premier League
Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool
Newcastle 1-2 Fulham
Ipswich 1-2 Southampton
Everton 4-0 Leicester
Liverpool go nine points clear at the top; Ivan Juric has his first win as Southampton boss – their second victory of the season – while Everton now have four wins in their past five in all competitions.
Leeds have beaten Cardiff 7-0. A dream day for them at Elland Road, extending their lead at the summit after Burnley were held 0-0 (again) at Portsmouth.
GOAL! Everton 4-0 Leicester (Ndiaye, 90)
Party time at Goodison! Iliman Ndiaye runs in a fourth and it’s all hail King David Moyes.
A very, very bad day for Leicester in their struggle against relegation.
Updated
Full time is approaching but the deals are still coming in thick and fast:
Most of these Premier League games, other than the one at Bournemouth, are now into added time. Newcastle and Ipswich are chasing goals to avoid home defeats.
League One: It looks like Steven Schumacher’s Bolton tenure is about to start with a painful defeat, as Reading snatch the lead late on through Harvey Knibbs’ penalty.
Elsewhere, Wrexham have seen their 1-0 lead, clinched so early on, wiped out by Crawley’s Bradley Ibrahim.
Updated
Walsall have done it, it’s 2-2 against Salford!
Leeds have a sixth against Cardiff.
And Burnley … still haven’t scored, or conceded, at Portsmouth.
GOAL! Ipswich 1-2 Southampton (Onuachu, 88)
Honey, wake the kids up. Southampton might win an actual Premier League game. Paul Onuachu nets a simple rebound after a Muric parry.
This could be so costly for Ipswich.

An email from Colum Fordham, who is watching Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool":
The subs on both sides of the Bournemouth-Liverpool clash are making their presence felt. Tavernier hitting the woodwork and Conor Bradley making driving runs for the Reds. But of course it’s the old hand Mo Salah – I do hope they renew his contract – who really makes the difference. Makes the difficult things look so sublimely simple. Kluivert Jr please take note.
League One: Some big goals have just gone in at the top of the table. Birmingham’s Jay Stansfield now has two goals as the Blues lead Rotherham 2-1 while Wycombe, down to 10 men, have been pegged back by Cambridge – 1-1 there.
GOAL! Newcastle 1-2 Fulham (Muniz, 82)
Fulham had looked so tepid in the first half but they’ve just stormed into an unlikely lead at St James’ Park, as the subs Rodrigo Muniz stuns the Gallowgate End. Goodness.

Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool: Will there be a twist in the tale here? Bournemouth haven’t stopped trying, that’s for sure. They just keep running into a brick wall, otherwise known as the Liverpool back four.
Scottish Premiership: It’s now 5-0 to Hearts at Dundee, and Hibs lead Aberdeen 2-0. Seems Jimmy Thelin is not the messiah after all. St. Johnstone are 1-0 up at St. Mirren. All of which means Dundee United could go five points clear in third if they win at Kilmarnock later … Simon McMahon
Updated
League Two: Walsall are facing a third successive defeat. Salford now lead 2-0 at the Bescot. A major wobble at the top of the fourth tier?
Oh hang on, Danny Johnson has just prodded one back for the Saddlers. It’s 2-1.
Updated
GOAL! Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool (Salah, 75)
Mo Salah doing Mo Salah things! That’s a cracking goal, curled in as he cut in off the right and it’s probably just secured the three points for Liverpool.
What a footballer he is. The Liverpool fans are in raptures.
Updated
Championship: Hull were leading 1-0 but Stoke have turned the tables on Humberside with Andrew Moran making it 2-1 – it’s a big game that one, with both clubs hovering above the drop zone.
Liverpool have introduced Darwin Nunez and Conor Bradley, with Cody Gakpo and Trent Alexander-Arnold replaced. It’s been a real battle for the visitors on the south coast this afternoon.
And Marcus Tavernier has rattled the woodwork for Bournemouth! So so close.
If you get a chance to watch Brandon Thomas-Asante’s lob for Coventry at Swansea this afternoon, please do. An outrageous effort and a contender for Championship goal of the season, surely.
Frank Lampard’s side have dominated the Swans so far and are 2-0 to the good.
Leeds got a fourth via Joel Piroe’s penalty and now they have a fifth from substitute Willy Gnonto! 5-0 with 23 minutes left. Damage limitation time for Cardiff.
How may he assist you?
Only Mohamed Salah has provided more assists (13) than Antonee Robinson in the Premier League this season (10).

Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool: Arne Slot wisely removes Mac Allister, who was treading a disciplinary tightrope, with Curtis Jones on instead.
Can the Cherries find a way back here?
GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Fulham (Jiménez, 61)
A leveller for Fulham and it’s a ninth of the season for Raul Jiménez! A great move is well rounded off by the resurgent Mexican.
Updated
Bournemouth fans are incensed. First they want a second yellow for Mac Allister for a needless kick-out, then their appeals for handball are ignored by Darren England. Nothing going for the Cherries at the minute.
Another underrated manager shout comes from Tim Stappard:
Sam Allardyce at Bolton is the most underrated manager in the EPL. Revolutionary.
League One: Birmingham’s record signing Jay Stansfield has hit a vital goal to level against Rotherham, while Charlton now lead 2-0 at Stevie Bruce’s Blackpool.
League Two: Crewe have hit back to make it 1-1 at Harrogate while the 10 men of Port Vale have restored their advantage against Accrington – 2-1 at Vale Park.
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool hasn’t been brilliant viewing since the break. Liverpool haven’t got going at all, actually, which is offering the Cherries hope – but they the hosts been too fluent either. They are huffing and puffing.
Really sloppy start to the second half from Liverpool.
— James Pearce (@JamesPearceLFC) February 1, 2025
Is Moyes the Prem’s most underrated manager? I’d stick Tony Pulis in that bracket, never very popular due to footballing aesthetics but mightily effective for a long time. The problem is, like politicians, most managerial tenures are bound to end in failure.
Updated
Everton 3-0 Leicester means plenty are taking pleasure in seeing David Moyes strutting his stuff on Merseyside once more, including emailer David Hindle:
David Moyes is one of the most hard-done-by managers around. The (mindless) abuse he has taken over the years was shameful. So I was delighted when he won a European trophy with West Ham and seeing him getting Everton going like this makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
An update from Scotland via Simon McMahon:
Afternoon Dominic. Lawrence Shankland and Blair Spittal, both former Dundee United players, have put Hearts 2-0 up against Dundee at Dens, much to the delight of the home fans I’m sure. Aberdeen, without a win in
15015 games, are trailing 2-0 to Hibs. Dundee United, still in third despite a recent poor run and with new signing Allan Campbell in the squad, travel to Kilmarnock in the teatime kickoff.
Thanks as always, Simon.

Game over at Elland Road? Former Swansea boy Daniel James makes it 3-0 for Leeds against Cardiff. And there was me thinking that could be tight and tetchy, given the Bluebirds’ recent uptick in form.
Ben Brereton Diaz is back in the Championship, back at Sheffield United and – guess what? – back scoring goals. Is he the modern day Darren Huckerby/Cameron Jerome/Dwight Gayle/David Nugent? You catch my drift. Answers on a postcard please.
Derby 0-1 Sheffield United.
Most of the games are back under way now. Some fascinating second halves are in store.
Bundesliga: Harry Kane has bagged a brace for Bayern Munich who are 4-1 up at home to Holsten Kiel and in position to cement their lead at the top of the table.
Dortmund lead Heidenheim 2-1 as new manager Nico Kovac prepares to take charge from tomorrow onwards. But there’s still a few minutes for them to hang on.

Fulham have been rather toothless at Newcastle in a low-quality game lit up by Jacob Murphy’s goal. Marco Silva’s side must do more.
Ipswich should be favourites to stroll past Southampton in the second half – they certainly need to if they’re to kickstart their survival bid. Saints have been very open in midfield.
The whistle has gone at the Vitality. Liverpool lead 1-0 at the interval.
This is by no means done and dusted as a contest. David Brooks had the ball in the Reds’ net and, for me, there ought to be question marks over that penalty call. You’ve seen them given but it was a tad soft; minimal contact.
You wouldn’t bet against Bournemouth launching a comeback in the second half but equally, Salah and co look primed to fire in more goals.
Ironically, I received the following email from Gary Naylor just before that goal went in.
I know you can score a goal too early, but can you score two goals too early? Yes, only an Evertonian, I know.
No you cannot, Gary. But what a revelation Beto has been this afternoon! His finishing has been razor-sharp and he’s taking his opportunity.
GOAL! Everton 3-0 Leicester (Beto, 45)
And Everton are dominating those headlines so far! They’ve just netted a vital third and are running riot against poor old Leicester right now.
A gap is starting to open up at the bottom.

The half-time whistles are beginning to sound around the country. I won’t run through every single scoreline – there are apps and data-bots for such things – but I’ll sum up the main headlines.
More on Burnley: They’ve had nine goalless draws this season – NINE! It could be become 10 if it stays this way at Fratton Park.
Championship: In a big surprise to absolutely no one, Burnley’s goal hasn’t been troubled by struggling Portsmouth. To be fair, the Clarets haven’t conceded a league goal since 21 December.
Stoke have levelled at Hull City courtesy of a Ali Al-Hamadi strike.
Some Liverpool-related emails have pinged into my inbox:
Kári Tulinius: “I’m watching with a couple of Liverpool fans, and they think that if their club beats Bournemouth, they’ll be halfway to the title. That says a lot about where the Cherries are these days.”
On the penalty, Drew Lundgren says: “No contact, but it’s Liverpool, so absolutely no chance VAR overturns.”
GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Fulham (Murphy, 37)
Jacob Murphy has the breakthrough for Newcastle! It was coming …
Updated
Bournemouth thought they had an equaliser! It was David Brooks who latched onto a ball through to finish sweetly, but the flag went up pretty quickly. Of course, it will be checked by the computermen …
It was eventually confirmed by VAR. Kerkez was the man offside in the buildup.
Updated
Newcastle 0-0 Fulham: There hasn’t been much to talk about at St James’ Park but Sandro Tonali has just leathered an effort off the crossbar. The Italian has really hit his straps of late and that Newcastle midfield looks quite formidable. Eddie Howe’s side are slowly turning the screw, hunting for a goal before the break.
League Two: The goals have arrived in the fourth tier, one going in for in-form Doncaster against MK Dons and one going against in-form Crewe, for Harrogate. Tranmere trail 2-0 at home to Colchester.
GOAL! Ipswich 1-1 Southampton (Delap, 31)
Liam Delap is played clean through and equalises for Ipswich. A big goal for them.
Southampton just don’t hold onto leads do they? It’s probably (one of the reasons) why they’re so far adrift at the basement.
Updated
Championship: Millwall have restored their lead over QPR through Luke Cundle, 2-1.
Coventry lead at Swansea, Hull are in front at home to Stoke.
There aren’t many goals going in elsewhere.
Updated
GOAL! Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool (Salah, 29)
No mistake by Mo Salah from 12 yards out. Kepa Arrizabalaga is well beaten.
There are boos for the referee from the Bournemouth fans.
Updated
Penalty to Liverpool! Gakpo is tripped in the box and Darren England doesn’t have much hesitation in pointing to the spot. VAR will check it mind you …
League Two: And the biggest shock so far is that runaway leaders Walsall trail 1-0 at home to Salford. In fairness, Matt Sadler’s Saddlers have been wobbling a touch of late, losing their last two before today, but they still boast an eight-point lead at the League Two summit.
Elsewhere, Port Vale lead Accrington despite having 10 men while AFC Wimbledon and Morecambe also have 1-0 leads.
Everton 2-0 Leicester: The Toffees again had the ball in the net via Jake O’Brien but he was ruled offside so it remains two-nil. Leicester just haven’t got going at all. You worry for them.
GOAL! Ipswich 0-1 Southampton (Aribo, 21)
Southampton snatch the lead at Portman Road! Could the league’s bottom club secure their second win of the season and take a step closer to avoiding that record low points tally?
There was a lengthy VAR check for offside but the goal stands.

Everton fans are in dreamland. At least, Mary Waltz is, according to her email.
“I must have been transported to an alternate universe,” she says. “Already two goals for Everton. The world has turned upside down!”
Your latest from the early Champo action is below, as Leeds race into a 2-0 lead against Cardiff via Manor Solomon. Daniel Farke’s side are looking a good bet to stay top.
Only two goals have been scored in the Premier League so far in these 3pm games and who’d have thought they’d both have gone to Everton?
Well, anyone who’s watched Leicester defend recently, in truth. A penny for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s thoughts.
Bournemouth 0-0 Liverpool: “Come on Bournemouth,” is the chant at a febrile Vitality Stadium amid a promising start from the Cherries. They always look so dangerous when they go forward.
GOAL! Everton 2-0 Leicester (Beto, 6)
Oh, Leicester, what are you doing?
Everton can scarcely believe their luck as Beto, pouncing on his chance in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, pounces on some dithering in the Foxes back line to score. Two-nil already!
Updated
And there’s a goal for Leeds! Brenden Aaronson has opened the scoring at Elland Road, which looks and sounds as noisy as ever.
Championship: Millwall’s lead didn’t last long. Alfie Lloyd has levelled for QPR already and it’s 1-1 after three minutes. Ooft.
Leeds v Cardiff will be one to keep an eye on in the second tier this afternoon. Always a spicy encounter.
Bournemouth v Liverpool: Both teams have already enjoyed forays forward at the Vitality Stadium, with Semenyo having a shot for the hosts and Liverpool then going down the other end and winning a corner. It always going to be an open contest.
The goals are flooding in already. Aaron Connolly has netted in the first minute for Millwall in their all-London clash with QPR, while Matty James has scored for Wrexham at Crawley. Goals.
GOAL! Everton 1-0 Leicester (Doucouré, 1)
Goodness me what a start for Everton! It’s direct but they won’t care, As Abdoulaye Doucouré wheels away before a jubilant Goodison crowd.

KICK OFF
What’s the sound? It’s the collective peeeeeep of referees’ whistles from around the country. I’ve got my multiple screens set up, my radio commentary on and my typing fingers primed.
Let’s go!
An email has dropped from regular contributor Jeremy Boyce:
“There’s a lot at stake today between bottom and near-bottom teams,” he writes. “A defining Saturday in this year’s story? Plenty in the Championship too, the top three all in action and hoping to distance themselves before the [Tees-Wear] derby on Monday. Like a Tour de France mountain stage, it’s ‘elimination par derriere’ for now.”
Updated
Bournemouth run so much and are a physical side and on top of you in every phase. They like to press very high and have an open game with lots of running.
We need to be ready in every centimetre of the pitch and hopefully we can [put] our forwards in promising areas.
Arne Slot speaking to the BBC.
The big question today is: can Bournemouth continue their recent heroics against the Premier League’s best side? Andoni Iraola’s men are unbeaten in their past 12 matches in all competitions, a run that has included wins over Newcastle and Manchester United away and a 5-0 walloping of Forest last week.
Liverpool have only lost once in the league all season – at home to Forest – and have been especially supreme on the road. But they have lost recent away games to Spurs (in the Carabao Cup) and PSV (in a Champions League dead-rubber). It’s a huge test for Arne Slot’s would-be champions and should be an entertaining game.
Methinks it’s shaping up to be an exciting deadline day on Monday. Ollie Watkins probably won’t go to Arsenal but Marcus Rashford is edging closer to a previously unthinkable loan to Aston Villa while Mathys Tel, fresh from rejecting Tottenham, might fancy a move to Manchester United instead.
It’s not quite Torres and Carroll but it’s not bad.

Seven!
Wow what a finish for Plymouth, who turned a 1-0 deficit around late on thanks to Ryan Hardie’s double, beating West Brom 2-1. As my Argyle-supporting editor has just put it, a “dire game and a proper mugging” – but the Green Army won’t care.
Bristol City ended with nine players on the pitch against Oxford but have forced a draw, while Norwich held out to win 1-0 at Tom Cleverley’s Watford.
And of course, no Guardian weekend of football would be complete without the 10 things to look out for. Here’s a snippet of Andy Hunter on Everton’s injury plight:
As [Sean] Dyche knew only too well, however, obstacles often emerge when Everton attempt to build momentum. The valuable away win at Brighton came at the cost of losing Orel Mangala for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin for several weeks with a hamstring problem. Both had responded brightly to Moyes’ arrival and leave holes that need filling before Monday’s transfer deadline. Beto is Everton’s only fit striker and must seize the opportunity presented by Calvert-Lewin’s absence if he is to have a long-term future at Goodison Park.
Some pre-3pm reading options for you all. Grab a coffee and enjoy.
Alexa, show me what a goal machine looks like.
Good grief, Forest are 5-0 up and Chris Wood has a hat-trick. After their surprise 5-0 reverse to Bournemouth last week, this is quite the statement from Nuno’s men. Back in the title race?
Elsewhere in the early kick-offs, Josh Sargent’s goal has Norwich 1-0 up at 10-man Watford, the 10 men of Bristol City have hit back to level at Oxford, while it’s goalless between bottom club Plymouth and Tony Mowbray’s West Brom.

The official team news is about to drop around the grounds at 1.45pm a la the new way of doings things. I’ll sum it all up in one handy post. FPL managers of the world brace yourselves.
This week’s episode of I Can’t Believe Chris Wood Is This Good is an absolute corker:
Preamble
Greetings all. Another weekend arrives, which means another Saturday chock-full of prime footie action. And of course another clockwatch, always the most enjoyable (and hectic) of tasks for run-of-the-mill journos like myself.
There’s a serious test of Liverpool’s title credentials as they meet in-form, on-fire, on-song Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium; Newcastle meet Fulham in a tantalising contest on the banks of the Tyne; while there’s a big clash at Goodison Park as royal blue strugglers Everton host royal blue strugglers Leicester to see … who will win that.
Away from the Premier League, there’s a full programme in the second, third and fourth tiers, a smattering of Scottish Premiership action and the fifth round of the FA Trophy to boot. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also among the Bundesliga sides taking to das Feld at around 2.30pm UK time.
Do feel free to drop me an email with your thoughts on any of today’s football. It’s going to move!
