t’s now been over 12 years since Boulevard high kicked its way onto Newcastle’s nightlife scene and on the strength of its latest show, it’s at the very top of its game.
Boulevard is a venue that is for all seasons, with amazing productions all the year through and, at a time when there’s a lot for people to worry about and a definite chill in the air, it’s Spring Show is just the tonic for everything that’s going on in the world.
The ingredient to Boulevard’s lasting success, other than its talented cast of course, is the fact that it’s growing number of productions play to what audiences want from a cabaret revue, while also delivering some decadent and demure old school glamour.
And the Spring show for 2023 takes a bit of everything that makes Boulevard so brilliant and blends it together to great effect. While we I don’t want to run the risk of spoiling things, you can expect everything from Ginger Rogers to Greggs and plumes of pink ostrich feathers to Primark.
The scintillating spectacles features barnstorming medlies dedicated to musical smashes Dreamgirls and Saturday Night Fever, well executed nods to the likes of Top Hat, The Wiz and A Chorus Lines with Danni Dee once again a superb and sublime leading lady, with a state presence and dance moves to die for.
The statuesque headliner is edging close to her seventh year at Boulevard and, with each new show, she proves just what a fantastic asset she’s been to not just the venue with her photo on its exterior wall, but also the city’s entertainment sector as a whole.
While hostess with the mostest Miss Rory had long been known for her sharp tongued repartis with the punters down on Churchill Street, and indeed, tore strips off a ‘live laugh love’ brigade in the audience who had a problem reducing their volume with real vigour, she now comes out her famous box more to get a share of the stage spotlight too.
Her hilarious finale cameos were a real delight and once again proved why she is such a MVP in Newcastle and the wider North East - catch her at the Tyne Theatre in May with another one woman show for further evidence!
Boulevard has rightly become a Tyneside institution and the fact that there is a segment in the new show that is dedicated to its finest moments to date is far from being a self indulgent pat on the back.
When you’re as fabulous as Boulevard is, you need to celebrate it!
