Bottles thrown at Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone after victory over Manchester United

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was struck by various objects from the crowd following his side's victory over Manchester United on Tuesday.

The reigning Spanish champions eliminated United from the Champions League in the last-16 stage as they won 1-0 at Old Trafford, through Renan Lodi's first-half header, taking them through 2-1 on aggregate. Upon the full-time whistle, Simeone made his usual sprint back to the changing rooms but had several objects thrown at him by the home supporters as he headed to the tunnel.

Footage of the incident appears to show a bottle thrown in the manager's direction from the stand surrounding the tunnel, which looks to have just avoided him, before he is then struck by what appears to be a can. A moment later another drink was thrown which splashed onto the touchline and more rubbish appeared to hit the Argentine as he made it to the tunnel.

It marks an embarrassing end to an embarrassing night for United, which has now ended even the faintest hopes the club still had of ending their five-year trophy drought this season.
