Bottle greenhouse plan for Paisley charity putting focus on mental health

A Paisley charity is not only looking to help those with mental health concerns – it also wants to give back to the environment with a new bottle greenhouse.

Recovery Across Mental Health (RAMH) is collecting two-litre bottles to upcycle the greenhouse that will help its garden group grow more plants and vegetables; all while supporting people's mental health in the process.

The charity is looking to build the plastic-made garden house over the winter to have it ready for spring.

James Power, information worker at the charity, said: “It is a brand-new project and people are volunteering their time to get involved in a project like this. It is a great opportunity to get hands on and get creative with something like this.

“We did a similar thing in Barrhead where we created a greenhouse and we have a new garden space next to our headquarters – there is a lot of green space and we see it is an opportunity for people to grow vegetables and plants and that obviously helps with their mental health.

“In terms of the actual structure itself, it is made of plastic bottles and it is good for the environment.

"What we think it will do, if we ask people to donate the bottles, they will then have an involvement in it as well. They will feel part of something and the space once we have done some work on it.”

The charity has another community garden in Barrhead which looks really impressive and there is hope that the new space will also look wonderful once completed.

Once everything has been set up, the garden space will be open to the public.

James added: “We are planning for it to be a nice place for people to sit and relax.

"We will have service users who are part of the garden group as well, who will be maintaining the garden, but the space itself will be open to everyone.”

The charity is looking for more people to donate their two-litre plastic bottles to help with the cause.

The locations of where the bottles can be dropped off and extra information can be found on the RAMH’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ramh.org

Bottles can be dropped off at any time of the week.
