The Boston Celtics have officially made reserve forward Grant Williams a restricted free agent by electing to tender an $8.5 million qualifying offer to the Charlotte native on Thursday afternoon according to new reporting from Spotrac’s Keith Smith.
Williams has been connected to a number of ball clubs despite being restricted given the Celtics’ current collective bargaining agreement (CBA)-induced cap crunch. This is due to the perception that the team might not be willing to bring Williams back if tendered a large enough offer. For his part, the Tennessee alum has reportedly been working with Boston to try and find a role and number that makes sense for all sides moving forward.
It remains to be seen whether such a bridge can be crossed for both parties as the intended pain of the league’s new CBA is exerted on the Celtics’ organization, but this is among the chief issues for Boston to sort out in the 2023 free agency period kicking off on Friday.
