Boston Marathon 2025 LIVE: Latest times, updates and results

Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi shattered the Boston Marathon women’s course record by over two minutes to deny compatriot Hellen Obiri a ‘three-peat’ of titles in a thrilling finish.

Lokedi took over two-and-a-half minutes off the 11-year record held by Buzunesh Deba, finishing with a time of 2:17:22. Obiri, who also ran a personal best to finish second, was bidding to become the first woman to win three Boston Marathons in a row in 26 years.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s John Korir recovered from an early fall to win, emulating his brother Wesley to triumph at the iconic major and back up his victory at the Chicago Marathon last year.

Course record holder Marcel Hug won his eighth men’s wheelchair title and third in a row in Boston, while there was an American winner in the women’s wheelchair race as Susannah Scaroni reclaimed her title.

Marcel Hug reflects on eighth Boston Marathon win

Monday 21 April 2025 18:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It was an elite eight for Marcel Hug in the men’s wheelchair marathon, the Silver Bullet unstoppable again over 26.2 miles.

“It means a lot to win this year [as the race celebrated] 50 years of wheelchairs in Boston,” Hug said. “For me, it will take some time to realize what it means, eight times wins. It’s such an incredible number.”

Calli Hauger-Thackery finishes sixth

Monday 21 April 2025 17:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

British interest out in Boston was provided by Calli Hauger-Thackery, who couldn’t quite challenge the time she scorched to in Berlin last year but still came in with a very tidy 2:22:38 and sixth place. That’s the third time she’s dipped under 2 hours and 23 minutes. Useful.

Family values

John Korir, by the way, follows elder brother Wesley in taking victory in Boston. 14 years between the siblings in age and 13 between successes in New England.

A beaming Sharon Lokedi speaks after victory in a course record

Monday 21 April 2025 17:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“I feel great,” Lokedi says. “I’m so excited. Yay!

“I want to say congratulations to everyone, it was a tough one out there. I’m so glad we had each other to fight all the way through. It was great being with them and fighting together. Towards the end, I said, ‘just keep fighting, just keep pushing, one more kick you can get it’. I didn’t believe it - I’m always second to [Hellen Obiri].

“At the halfway, I saw we ran 68 minutes and we just kept going. I hoped I would still have it towards the end - you can’t tell at halfway. When I crossed and saw the time, I couldn’t believe it.”

Des Linden comes home

Monday 21 April 2025 17:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Des Linden soaks it all up one last time as the veteran American finishes her final Boston Marathon to huge cheers. The weather conditions are rather better than on the wretched day when she triumphed her in 2018; the soon to be 42-year-old is the fifth American across the line to a respecting reaction from her compatriots, bowing down at her feet. Wonderful. 02:26:19 her time.

So Buzunesh Deba’s course record goes, making Lokedi an extra $50,000 richer on top of her winnings. Hellen Obiri and Yalemzerf Yehualaw were also a long way inside that previous mark. They could have done little more.

Sharon Lokedi wins the Boston Marathon!

Monday 21 April 2025 17:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A course record for Sharon Lokedi, and a Boston Marathon tile! A second major for the 31-year-old, and an uber-impressive performance. She takes the tape inside 2 hours and 18 minutes for a massive lifetime best.

Over the hills and far away.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 17:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The elastic has snapped - Sharon Lokedi is romping away from her compatriot! What a win this will be for the Kenyan, revenge for the reverse result last year.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 17:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Hellen Obiri’s running style might be described as idiosyncratic at the best of times, but it feels like she is really having to work here. Just over a kilometre between her and a three-peat - but Sharon Lokedi will not be moved!

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Lokedi kicks! And there’s daylight! Only briefly, but a slight sign of weakness? Obiri gulps down some fluids and resets, closing again.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This will be a course record - but who will take it? 2.4km to go. Hellen Obiri seems happy in the slipstream, Sharon Lokedi inviting her to come up alongside her twice but on each occasion drawing no response.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Hellen Obiri is still there. Surely one of Lokedi or Yehualaw has to go now if they can to try and rid themselves of the two-time defending champion.

And Yehualaw is fading! To the front goes Lokedi but her fellow Kenyan is powering on just behind her.

Boston Marathon - Amane Beriso distanced

Monday 21 April 2025 16:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Right, movement in the women’s race, where Amane Beriso is gone from the group of contenders. She can stay with the rest of the breakaway pack no longer, leaving Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi and Yalemzerf Yehualaw to contest victory over the last 5 kilometres.

Boston Marathon men's results

Monday 21 April 2025 16:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Gutting for Conner Mantz, a huge personal best but just missing out on the podium and Ryan Hall’s American record, set here in 2011.

Here’s your top five:

1 John Korir (Kenya) 2:04.45

2 Alphonce Simbu (Tanzania) 2:05.04

3 CyBrian Kotut (Kenya) 2:05.04

4 Conner Mantz (USA) 2:05.08

5 Muktar Edris (Ethiopia) 2:05.59

John Korir wins the Boston Marathon!

Monday 21 April 2025 16:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sensational! A stumble and a tumble at the start but pure dominance thereafter from Kenya’s John Korir, adding Boston glory to the Chicago title he took in the autumn.

Who needs a race number? He can afford to ease up a little and still come home in 2.04:44.

Second for Alphone Felix Simbu, third for CyBrian Kotut in a thrilling sprint finish, with Conner Mantz just squeezed out.

Boston Marathon

CyBrian Kotut, Conner Mantz and Alphonse Felix Simbu look set to contest the minor medals, but out in front, there’s no stopping John Korir. Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

No race-winning move is as yet apparent in the women’s race. Four abreast at the front, Hellen Obiri still looking comfortable enough with that finishing kick perhaps to come. Nine kilometres to go.

Conner Mantz pushes on

Monday 21 April 2025 16:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mantz is driving it on, looking to get away from CyBrian Kotut but not yet quite able to. How much will this hurt the American in the final couple of kilometres? John Korir is nearing the 40km mark.

John Korir holding steady

Monday 21 April 2025 16:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s looking better and better for John Korir. His rivals are out of sight and more interested in fighting amongst themselves, unable to close in on our runaway leader. Conner Mantz remains right among them, pushing for a podium finish.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle

1.21.22 the time for the women through 25km - so on track for a course record, if they can hold it.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s a quartet now at the front of the women’s field, Sharon Lokedi doing rather well to close a gap having appeared to have been distanced. They can’t afford to take Hellen Obiri to the line - can Amane Beriso and Yalemzerf Yehualaw dislodge the Kenyan?

Away goes Korir!

Monday 21 April 2025 16:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Quite something from John Korir. He’s opened up a HUGE lead on the rest of the men’s elite field. Can he hold it in the final 8km?

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:14 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Or perhaps not - sensing an opportunity with a couple of others put in trouble by Mantz’s acceleration, John Korir, shorn of his name after that fall earlier, begins to up the pace and he is moving! An unidentified flying object, perhaps...

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Now then. Conner Mantz hits the front just after the water zone - he’s under American record pace so far and looking good. He’s already taken the national record at half-marathon distance this year, and this is very promising for home hopes.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 16:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Here, though, are the leading five - a couple of Ethiopians and a trio of Kenyans, a familiar marathon make-up:

Hellen Obiri

Amane Beriso

Yalemzerf Yehualaw

Irine Cheptai

Sharon Lokedi

Lokedi and Obiri don’t have the times of the other three, but they’ve proven they can stay the course on the hills here before. We’re into a crucial stretch through the halfway mark.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 15:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Not with that leading five, but nonetheless worth watching today is 2018 winner Des Linden, running for the final time. 18 years after her debut in Boston, Linden has announced her retirement from racing after this race.

Back to the elite men, where there’s about 15 at the front, led by Canada’s Rory Linkletter. He won the Mesa Half Marathon a couple of months ago and he’s through that same mark in a relatively speedy time.

A more select group has gathered in the women’s race - Amane Beriso and Hellen Obiri are two of a quintet seemingly primed to vie for victory.

Susannah Scaroni snares women's wheelchair win

Monday 21 April 2025 15:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Dominant stuff from Susannah Scaroni, a West-Coaster thriving in the east. The 2023 champion just blew away the rest of the wheelchair racers on the hills mid-course, and never really looked back. So much experience, so much power. In she flies with a time of 1.40:16, conquering Boston again by more than two minutes.

Amane Beriso moves to the front of the women's race

Monday 21 April 2025 15:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A concerted effort from Amane Beriso, kicking and putting Hellen Obiri and the rest in danger. Obiri has managed to go with Beriso and Yalemzerf Yehualaw, though the rest look to be flagging.

Marcel Hug claims men's wheelchair victory!

Monday 21 April 2025 15:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Three in a row for Marcel Hug! An eighth Boston Marathon win overall for the Silver Bullet, unstoppable again on the New England roads. Like clockwork for the Swiss sensation.

Men on track for record time

Monday 21 April 2025 15:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The men’s field are making good progress, Sisay Lemma as yet unable to force himself free as he did last year with the elite men on track for a course record. Plenty more undulations to come, however, with an hour and 15 minutes of running still to come.

There was a bit of a hiccup for John Korir at the start - the 2024 Chicago Marathon winner took a tumble and is now bib-less, sporting a few scars of his brush with the asphalt.

The two Ethiopians just change up into another gear as they come through the refuelling zone at 10km, stringing out the women’s elite field as a few strain to hang on.

The women are still all together, too, with Hellen Obiri second in the line. Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso Shankule looks to have good form slightly further back as compatriot Rahma Tusa takes the front.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 15:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The wheelchair athletes have hit the hills, the pain on the face of Susannah Scaroni all too evident as she finds the right rhythm to get the wheels turning. The 2023 winner is moving clear of the field having missed her title defence last year.

Boston Marathon

Monday 21 April 2025 15:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sisay Lemma now heads the men’s pack, no pacemakers ahead of him as is tradition in Boston. 4.32 for the first mile. Speedy.

Conner Mantz is right with Lemma - how fast can he and Clayton Young, close friends and so often together come the end, go today?

There's the gun!

Away the elite women go, Hellen Obiri’s arms swinging with purpose as she powers into place at the front. 26.2 miles ahead of them.

Elite men begin

Monday 21 April 2025 14:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s a predictably frenzied opening from the elite field, surging down the hill as they settle into their stride. A group of about 20 runners are beginnning to pack off the front.

Back behind them, Hellen Obiri and the rest of the women’s field are just about ready to go.

And they're off!

Elite men set to get underway

Monday 21 April 2025 14:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Assembled on the start line are the some of the world’s fastest marathon men, a touch parky for now on a chilly enough Boston morning - but they won’t be for long.

Boston Marathon: A hilly course could pose problems

Monday 21 April 2025 14:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Boston is often considered among the more difficult of the major marathons, the hills around the city posing problems to elite and not-so-elite runners alike - even if it is a net downhill course. Sisay Lemma was flying last year in the men’s race before the fatigue hit him late on, the Ethiopian holding on to take victory but someway short of the time it appeared he may finish with. Judging one’s effort will be key today, with the elite men underway in the next 10 minutes or so...

Fast start to men's wheelchair race

Monday 21 April 2025 14:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Marcel Hug is putting the power down on the front, trying to distance Daniel Romanchuk, a regular rival. They’ve got 90 seconds on the rest but a gap is opening up between Hug and the American.

Eden Rainbow-Cooper is the reigning Boston champion after becoming the first British woman to win this race last year. Manuela Schar, the four-time Boston champion and course record holder, is back to challenge Rainbow-Cooper this year.

The USA’s Tatyana McFadden, who won four years in a row between 2013 and 2016 and then won her fifth title in 2017, is back in the field again this year.

Boston Marathon: What is the weather?

Monday 21 April 2025 14:10 , Jamie Braidwood

This year's forecasts call for comfortable marathon weather. It should be around 8C ( in the high 30s and low 40s) at the start in Hopkinton, rising to 13C (the mid-50s) as the runners make their way toward Copley Square.

Winds are expected to be light.

Boston Marathon: Men's wheelchair

Monday 21 April 2025 14:07 , Jamie Braidwood

There’s no doubt Marcel Hug is the favourite for the men’s wheelchair. He is a seven-time Boston champion, holds the course record from last year, and is the Olympic champion.

Can the 39-year-old add an eighth? Daniel Romanchuk of the United States and Jetze Plat are among the favourites too.

We are underway!

John Korir aiming to keep Boston triumphs in the family

Monday 21 April 2025 13:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Ethiopia’s reigning champion Sisay Lemma headlines a stacked men's field that includes Kenyan two-time winner Evans Chebet and his compatriot John Korir, who won in Chicago last year.

Korir has been receiving tips from his bother, Wesley, who won the Boston Marathon in 2012, and he believes having a champion in the family will boost his chances.

"He knows the course well. He knows where to make a move and also to relax the legs," said Korir, whose time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 44 seconds in Chicago is the second-fastest in the Boston field. "So that's been a good help to me in training. I think it's good."

Hellen Obiri targets 'three-peat' in Boston

Monday 21 April 2025 13:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Hellen Obiri will bid to become the first Kenyan woman to win three Boston Marathons in a row - and the first overall in 26 years - after picking up bronze at the Paris Games and finishing second in New York last year.

The 35-year-old was met with scepticism when she made the switch from the 5,000 metres - once her signature event with two world golds - to the endurance distance in 2022 but she has quieted the doubters and won New York two years ago.

"Defending a win is never easy, and to win the Boston Marathon twice in a row was hard, but I am happy to have done it," Obiri said after being named in the elite field.

She will be pushed by Ethiopian Amane Beriso, the 2023 world champion and fastest in the field with a best time of 2:14:58 run in Valencia three years ago, while Desiree Linden, the last American to win the race in 2018, is among home hopes.

Boston Marathon to recognise 50th anniversary of wheelchair race

Monday 21 April 2025 12:50 , Jamie Braidwood

When Bob Hall won the Boston Marathon wheelchair category in 1975, in 2 hours, 58 minutes, his prize was a certificate of achievement, just like the runners.

50 years on, the men's and women's wheelchair winners will claim top prizes of $50,000 from a purse of more than $250,000, with a possible $50,000 extra for a course record. Many of the entrants will line up with paralympic and major marathon victories on their resumes and will expect to complete the course in a mere 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The evolution of the wheelchair races in Boston, which became the first of the majors to embrace the category, will be recognised today with Hall serving as the grand marshal of this year’s race. "It had nothing to do with, per se, the marathon, but it was about the inclusion," he said. "I didn't care if anybody got on my coattails. It was that I was bringing people along."

Boston Marathon: What is the course?

Monday 21 April 2025 12:35 , Jamie Braidwood

The course begins in Hopkinton, a town in rural Massachusetts, with runners setting off from Main Street and heading down Route 135. They will plod through the towns of Ashland, Framingham, and Natick, before joining Route 16 shortly after Wellesley. Hanging a right on to Commonwealth Avenue (Route 30) by the fire station in Newton Lower Falls, the course continues over the Newton Hills and by Boston College, a university, before arriving at Cleveland Circle via Chestnut Hill Avenue.

The runners will then negotiate a left turn on to Beacon Street as it nears the finish, turning right on to Hereford Street, left on to Boylston Street and eventually concluding near the Boston Public Library in Copley Square in the heart of the city.

Monday 21 April 2025 11:50 , Jamie Braidwood

The 2025 edition of the Boston Marathon will again see some of the world’s best distance runners compete alongside a large mass participation field.

First held in the 19th century, a tough 26.2-mile course will test elite and recreational runners alike with 30,000 entrants again set to start.

One of six World Marathon Majors, it will be held on Patriots’ Day in the United States, as is traditional.

Defending champion Hellen Obiri returns but faces tough competition in a strong elite women’s field, while Sisay Lemma is also back to bid for another elite men’s title.
