Boston Celtics Forward Sam Hauser Signs Million Contract Extension

Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser (30) defends Miami Heat guard Jaime Jaquez Jr. (11) during the second half of Game 4 of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series, Monday, April 29, 2024, in Miami

Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser has agreed to a lucrative four-year, $45 million contract extension, as confirmed by his agent. This extension will keep Hauser with the Celtics through the 2028-2029 season, with a salary of $2 million for the 2024-2025 season.

Hauser, who went undrafted in 2021 out of the University of Virginia, has emerged as one of the NBA's top 3-point shooters. Last season, he shot an impressive 42.4% from beyond the arc, ranking fourth among players with 400 or more attempts. Over his career, he has maintained a strong 42.2% shooting percentage from 3-point range.

The Celtics have been active in securing their core players, with recent extensions for All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum and guard Derrick White. The addition of Hauser's contract pushes the Celtics' 2025-2026 payroll to a projected $225 million, with an additional $210 million in luxury tax penalties.

With this significant financial commitment, the Celtics are on track to have one of the highest combined salary and luxury tax bills in NBA history. This financial situation may impact the team's ability to make future trades involving first-round draft picks in 2032 and 2033.

Hauser's impact on the court has been substantial, as he made 179 catch-and-shoot 3-pointers last season, ranking sixth in the league. He also joined a select group of Celtics players by becoming the third in team history to make 10 three-pointers in a single game, alongside Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.
