Borough Market: Popular fruit and veg stall files for bankruptcy

A popular fruit and veg stall in Borough Market has filed for bankruptcy

The Elsey & Bent, the large fruit and veg stall on Stoney Street, has been issued with an insolvency notice, the UK's official public record holder, The Gazette shows.

A meeting with creditors will now take place on November 30.

During the session, creditors will nominate someone to lead the liquidation of the company and consider a resolution to wind up the company.

Ahead of the meeting, Elsey & Bent has been removed from the Borough Market list of traders on the website.

Although unconfirmed by the fruit seller, an Instagram post appeared to show the stall as it prepared to close down on October 27 accompanied with the hashtags, "#goodbye" and "lastdaytomorrow".

The stall was a part of C & C Fruit, a company run by Peter Fowler - before he passed away this year - who later added a stall in Borough Market which he passed to his son Lawrence and daughter Kelly.

A spokesperson for Borough Market said Elsey & Bent ceased trading at the market in late October but did not add any further comment.

In September, another popular greengrocer was allegedly banned from selling their famed chocolate-covered strawberries which sparked outrage across social media.

Costing £7.50, the tasty treat has sparked a social media storm but seller, Turnips, said it was forced to stop selling the snack as Borough Market deemed it neither “fruit, veg or related produce”.

In a TikTok video, which gained over a million views, a staff member tells disappointed customers that the mushroom risotto was also banned as it was not being prepared in an approved hot food area.

Due to the overwhelming backlash across social media, the staff member later informed customers that Borough Market had reversed its decision.

In a later video, the staff member added: “We’re back in business, we won! We’re back in business guys due to popular demand, our chocolate-covered strawberries are open again.

“They were disputing our rights to sell our chocolate-covered strawberries but we won, we freed the strawberry.”

Elsey & Bent have been approached for comment.
