Boris Johnson 'stuck two fingers up at the rest of us' with Downing Street parties, claims Ian Blackford

The SNP has made a fresh call on Boris Johnson to resign after the latest revelations in the partygate scandal allege the Prime Minister held a lockdown-breaking birthday bash in 2020.

ITV News revealed last night that up to 30 staff celebrated with the Tory leader in Downing Street cabinet room on June 19 where his wife, Carrie, surprised him with a cake.

The event lasted for almost half and hour and there are claims that family and friends continued to celebrate upstairs at the PM’s flat.

The latest revelations come as senior civil servant, Sue Gray, finalises her report into allegations of multiple parties in Downing Street during the pandemic, which is expected to be published this week.

Ian Blackford, SNP leader at Westminster, said Johnson was "sticking two fingers up at the rest of us" as allegations of lockdown breaches at the heart of the UK Government pile up.

"The public reaction to all of this has been quite staggering. It's brought back memories to people of what happened when they couldn't be with their loved ones," he told BBC Radio Scotland.

"And the man that was responsible for the rules, that the rest of us were supposed to follow, was breaking his own rules on multiple occasions.

"We now know this party wasn't just for members of staff, because we know the Prime Minister's interior designer was at the party as well.

"This is a massive failure of leadership and somewhere along the line he's got to accept responsibility.

"He's stuck two fingers up at the rest of us. He has to recognise he doesn't have the moral authority to lead.

"Quite simply, he needs to realise that the right thing for him to do is to show some dignity, show some self-respect, and to resign."

Downing Street last night confirmed the event did take place.

In a statement last night, a spokesman said: “A group of staff working in No 10 that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room after a meeting to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday. He was there for less than ten minutes.”
