Boris Johnson praised young girl for not having a birthday party during lockdown... just weeks before having one himself

The Prime Minister praised a young girl for not having a birthday party during the pandemic then proceeded to have one himself weeks later.

In an open letter posted on March 20, 2020, seven-year-old Josephine told Boris Johnson on the day of her birthday that she was staying at home because 'you asked us to'.

She goes on to say that her "mummy and daddy might have to cancel my party but I don't mind because I was everybody to be ok".

Mr Johnson praised the young girl in a reply letter written on March 21, 2020, which read: "I am glad to hear you are staying at home, though I am sorry to hear about your party.

"We have all got to do our bit to protect the NHS and save lives, and that is exactly what you are doing, so well done.

"You are setting a great example. We are working round the clock to keep people safe, and if we work together we can send coronavirus packing."

The letter continues to praise Josephine while informing her that once the pandemic is over she can 'definitely have a party with your friends'.

Despite Mr Johnson praising the seven-year-old girl for 'setting a great example', it has been reported that he had his own birthday bash only a few weeks after responding to the letter.

According to ITV News, the Prime Minister had his own birthday party on June 19, 2020, despite the fact that social gathering restrictions were still in place at the time.

Allegedly, the Prime Minister's wife, Carrie Johnson, helped organise the party in the afternoon just after 2pm.

Around 30 people were reported to attend the event which was held in the Cabinet Room following Mr Johnson's visit to a school in Hertfordshire.

During the period the party was held, social gatherings were strictly prohibited under lockdown laws to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

No 10 said staff had "gathered briefly" to "wish the prime minister a happy birthday", stating that he was there "for less than 10 minutes".

The claim there was a full party has also been denied by multiple minister.

Environment Secretary George Eustice denied claims that 30 people were in the Cabinet Room and said the number of staff present was "closer to 10" and it "was literally just a birthday cake brought in at the end of the day".

The claim has also been denied by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps who said the group had been working together all day and the cake had been organised by Mr Johnson's office.

Sue Gray, who is compiling a report into gatherings on government property while Covid restrictions were in place, already knew about the event on June 19, according to the BBC.
