Keir Starmer calls for Tory MPs to ‘step up and get rid’ of Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson will make a last bid to his MPs before the no-confidence vote this evening.
Chair of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady announced that the threshold of 54 letters had been reached to trigger the vote, which he confirmed would go ahead from 6pm to 8pm.
The prime minister will give a speech to Tory MPs in an attempt to rally their support before the vote. He has already sent a letter to MPs describing the upcoming vote as a “golden opportunity” to put an end to “the media’s favourite obsession”, a line interpreted as a veiled reference to the Partygate scandal.
It comes as Boris Johnson’s anti-corruption tsar resigned from his position, claiming it is “pretty clear” the prime minister broke the ministerial code over Partygate.
The Conservative MP John Penrose added that insisted Mr Johnson should step down as prime minister.
