Rishi Sunak’s by-election headache deepened on Saturday afternoon as a third Boris Johnson ally quit in the space of 24 hours.
Nigel Adams became the latest MP to announce his departure from the government benches after Mr Johnson himself walked after being handed the findings of a report into whether he misled parliament during the Partygate scandal.
Nadine Dorries, the former culture secretary, also quit with immediate effect meaning Mr Sunak now faces three by-elections.
Earlier, Mr Johnson was accused of “Trumpian” behaviour after lashing out at an inquiry investigating whether he misled parliament over Covid lockdown parties.
He also criticised Mr Sunak, suggesting his government was not conservative.
“It feels to me he is angry and he is convinced by his own truth and his own righteousness,” Will Walden, Mr Johnson’s former press secretary, said earlier.
“There’s no apology, no taking responsibility. It all feels very Trumpian. I think a large part of him actually believes that he really has been done wrong.”
