Boris Johnson 'missing in action' as country sizzles in hottest day in UK history

Boris Johnson has “clocked off” and missed three Cobra meetings on the UK heatwave to go on a jolly, Labour has claimed

The Prime Minister was slammed for skipping an emergency Cobra meeting on Monday as temperatures soared across the UK.

Instead he was pictured flying a fighter jet as the UK was set to experience its hottest day on record, with temperatures forecast to hit up to 41C.

Labour listed Johnson as “missing in action” as the Prime Minister did not attend last week’s Cobra meetings on the heatwave either.

In the Commons Fleur Anderson MP, Labour’s shadow Cabinet Office Minister, accused Johnson of being a “finished Prime Minister who has clocked off with with 49 dangerous days to go.”

She added that the heatwave was a reminder that the government had not tackled the climate change emergency and that the Tory leadership contest gave “little hope” that would change.

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said Johnson and his ministers have shown a “total absence of leadership” in responding to the “extreme heat emergency”, according to

Lucas, who has secured an urgent question in the Commons, said: “The Government is turning up at this national extreme heat emergency with a watering can, when we need a giant fire hose.

“We are seeing a total absence of leadership. The Prime Minister refuses to chair the Cobra meeting taking place today, and is instead filling his time with lavish parties at Chequers and juvenile photo ops on an RAF fighter jet.”

Selfie footage emerged on Monday of Johnson’s ride in a Typhoon plane on a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire last Thursday.

He can be seen flying alongside the flagship Voyager plane he uses to travel on overseas trips and giving a thumbs up.

The SNP’s Steven Bonnar MP said that with the RAF had closed operations out of Brize Norton base because the runway was melting but “our esteemed Prime Minister has declined to attend” Cobra meetings.

He said the excuses offered by Kit Malthouse, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, for Johnson’s non-attendance were “completely unacceptable”.
