Boris Johnson has been accused of being out of touch by asking who Lorraine was at the end of his Good Morning Britain interview with Susanna Reid. The Prime Minister looked bewildered when the GMB presenter said she was going to have to wrap up the interview because the Lorraine show was about to start.
The Prime Minister appeared on Good Morning Britain for the first time in five years after infamously hiding in a fridge to avoid an interview in the lead up to the last General Election,
He was grilled on the cost of living crisis, Partygate and the Ukraine crisis, but as Susanna handed over to the Scottish presenter, who has been on our screens for nearly 40 years, Boris could be heard asking "Who is Lorraine?"
As she wrapped up the live interview on Tuesday morning, Susanna said: "Lorraine is waiting to take up all the issues that you have brought up in this interview. Thank you very much indeed."
When Boris looks bewildered asked who Lorraine was, Susanna told him she was a "television legend".
A smiling Lorraine described it was a "masterclass" in political interviewing, and told the Prime Minister not to worry she was going to be talking about alpacas and not carrying on the interview.
Later she said to viewers: "Why should he know who I am? I mean, he is busy in the morning. He shouldn't be watching us Although, he could learn a lot, but he hasn't lost votes just because he doesn't know who I am. Brilliant interview by Susanna, and that was very, very funny. Made my morning."
Political commentator for the ipaper, Paul Waugh said: "Who's Lorraine?" Boris Johnson asks. It didn't sound like a dig, it sounded like he genuinely had NO idea who Lorraine is In an interview that was meant to tell GMB viewers he was in touch with them...
Rhondda MP Chris Bryant said on Twitter: "Boris Johnson had nothing to say #gmb to those suffering the Tory cost of living crisis. So out of touch he even asked ‘who is Lorraine?’ Yes, he is toast."
Boris Johnson was also criticised for talking about introducing free buses for pensioners after being told a 77-year-old woman rides them all day to keep warm amid the cost of living crisis. You can follow what he said in the interview here.
Host Susana Reid said she’d had an email from 77-year-old pensioner Elsie, who can only afford to eat one meal and day and spends her morning riding on buses for free to avoid using energy at home.
The prime minister responded to say it was he who introduced the ‘Freedom Pass’ that allows people in London over 60 to travel on buses for free.
