Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should resign, say 89% of Mirror readers

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should resign over partygate fines, according to the majority of Mirror readers.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer received a £50 fine from the Met Police for attending a lockdown party in Downing Street on 19 June 2020 amid Covid restrictions.

Both politicians should step down after finally admitting to breaking the law with their lockdown birthday bash in the Cabinet room, according to a staggering 89 percent of respondents*.

Only 11 percent of voters said the PM and Sunak should stay in their current roles, while one percent of those who voted were unsure.

Sir Keir Starmer called for both politicians to step down after being handed fixed penalty notices, saying the Tories are "totally unfit to govern".

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public. They must both resign," the Labour leader said. “The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better.”

Nigel Mills also became the first Tory MP to demand Boris Johnson and Sunak's resignation - stating: "We have to have higher standards than that of people at the top".

However, a slew of Tories including Nadine Dorries, Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng supported the PM after he abologised to the public for breaking Covid rules.

Former MP Edwina Currie even boasted that she "really doesn't care" about the law being broken because the Tories will win elections regardless.

Speaking on ITV's GMB, Ms Currie said: “What matters for me and what matters for millions of people in this country is the results we get from our politicians. The results we get from Boris are pretty good.

“Last week we had a by-election here in the High Peak and we took a seat from Labour which means we’ve taken control of the borough from Labour.

“Everybody had an opportunity to express their viewpoint. And what happened was we won the seat, we actually won it, that’s what’s happening.”
