Boris' free meals failure is a Dickens of a scandal - Voice of the Mirror

Welcome to Dickensian Britain, where hundreds of thousands of children go hungry because the Government can’t be bothered to ensure they’re fed properly.

If they were the kids of Tory Ministers and MPs it’s a fair bet that Boris Johnson would be pulling out all the stops to fill their stomachs.

But these are the sons and daughters of low-paid adults falling through holes in the welfare state – so the establishment ignores their plight and finds excuses to leave them hungry.

The lamentable failure to heed Government food tsar Henry Dimbleby’s plea to give free school meals to all children in homes on Universal Credit will divide the poor between the fed and the famished.

As a result, the Tories’ much-trailed food strategy White Paper must be rewritten, or the scars of this grinding poverty will blight many of our youngsters for the rest of their lives.

This scandal shows that not every child matters to the Government – and that’s a damning indictment of the Tories and a Prime Minister interested only in his own welfare.

Show you care

Carers are, too often, unsung heroes on breadline wages who are clearly worth £15 an hour.

That so many are struggling on or near the £9.50 minimum wage explains why our country is short of upwards of 100,000 staff.

And when so many low-paid, dedicated carers are quitting vital jobs because high fuel costs mean it isn’t paying even a survivable pittance, either we give them what they’re worth or the vulnerable will suffer.

Carers deserve a pay rise. Britain deserves a pay rise. The Tories’ low-wage economy and falling living standards are hurting us all.

Ray of hope

Get out the sun block and your summer clothes, and get ready to make the most of the good weather on the way.

When air chaos is encouraging many of us to book super staycations instead, sunshine will be very warmly welcomed.
