Former tennis star Boris Becker is set to be deported back to Germany within days - much to the delight of his mother Elvira.
The three-time Wimbledon champion was was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for concealing £2.5m worth assets after being declared bankrupt in 2017.
He served eight of the expected 30 months in the UK and is now expected to be sent back to his native country in time for the festive period. He will not have to serve the rest of his prison stint on his return to Germany and this was music to the ears of his elderly mum, who is thrilled to reunite with her dear son.
According to The Sun , Elvira, 87, told a friend: “This is the best Christmas present I could hope for – I cannot wait to hold my beloved son in my arms.” And another close friend of the former world number one's family said: “Elvira is simply overjoyed he is coming home.
"For her, having Boris out of prison and back home is the best thing imaginable – and for it to happen in time for Christmas will be great for her. She was worried about when she might see him again, so this is all a huge deal for her - especially given her age.”
Becker is set for release from HMP Huntercombe in Oxfordshire– which holds foreign prisoners – as early as this week.
It is understood he will not be eligible to apply to return to the UK as a visitor until his full sentence has expired.
The Sun also reports that according to friends of Becker, Ion Tiriac, the German’s former manager is set to help him re-adjust once he is sent back to Germany. “He wrote Boris a very touching letter shortly after he was jailed telling him to keep his head up, they said.
“They remain very close friends and if Ion can support him he will. Boris will need all the help he can get.”
