Borgue couple organising Kirkcudbright ceilidh in aid of Ukraine

A Borgue couple is helping organise a ceilidh in Kirkcudbright next Saturday in aid of Ukraine.

Gordon and Anne Mursell, along with other volunteers, are hosting the event on behalf of the South West Scotland branch of EMiS, the European Movement in Scotland.

The February 18 shindig in Kirkcudbright Parish Church hall comes as the first anniversary of the war, February 23, approaches.

Anne said: “It takes quite a lot of time to organise a ceilidh.

“And as it’s coming up to a year since the Russian invasion we felt the timing was quite appropriate.

“The idea came about through the EmiS and we wanted to reach out to people in Europe and right now Ukraine is the obvious example.

“It’s a desperate situation there for ordinary people simply trying to survive.

“All we can do is try to provide what little support we can.

“Even if it’s a few hundred pounds – it all helps.”

All proceeds from the ceilidh will go to Sunflower Scotland, which was set up to help the population in the Ukrainian front line villages.

The charity buys food in Ukraine with money raised in Scotland to support the local economy then distribute it free to those who need it most.

Women, children, disabled and older people are given priority.

Ann added: “The message we are getting is that it is better to give them money than stuff because transportation can be difficult and time consuming.

“Sending it direct means they can use the money in the way they feel is most appropriate.

“Sunflower Scotland operate near the front line in eastern Ukraine and are well placed to deliver food, generators and fuel where they are most needed.”

Tickets for the ceilidh are £10, under 12s free, and a family ticket is £25.

They are available from either Thomsons Newsagents or the Clann café in Kirkcudbright.

Music will be provided by the Shore Road Ceilidh Band.
