
Federal agents are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred on Monday afternoon near the US-Canadian border in Vermont. A US Border Patrol agent was shot and killed during the incident, along with another individual who was also killed, and a third person who was injured and is now in custody.
The Border Patrol agent who lost his life has been identified as David Maland, 44, assigned to CBP's Swanton Sector, which covers parts of Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire. The shooting took place on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 13 miles south of the Canadian border.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman expressed condolences and confirmed that the agent was shot in the line of duty. He highlighted the daily risks that Border Patrol agents face to ensure the safety and security of Americans and the homeland.
The FBI, in collaboration with US Border Patrol and Vermont State Police, is actively investigating the incident to gather evidence and process the scene. Despite the tragic event, there is currently no threat to the public.



Governor Phil Scott's office has acknowledged the incident and stated that the Vermont State Police are providing support to federal partners in the investigation. The Port Authority Police Benevolent Association in New Jersey also expressed condolences for the loss of Agent Maland.
As the investigation continues, more information is expected to be released by the Department of Homeland Security. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in the line of duty.
