Border Czar Tom Homan is reportedly "not happy" with what he sees as the Eric Adams administration lack of help on the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, and will meet with him to address the matter, the New York Post reported on Thursday.
In fact, the meeting will take place at ICE's headquarters in the city, seemingly a way for Homan to show Adams his discontent. "Homan is not happy and hasn't seen enough progress," a source close to Homan told the outlet.
The source went on to make reference to the Department of Justice's recent directive to drop all corruption charges against Adams this week, hinting that the decision leaves him indebted to the Trump administration. "The mayor has emergency order power. He's going to have to beg and be a good boy for Trump."
Adams has repeatedly broken with other Democratic-led cities, saying he's keen to work with the Trump administration on immigration. "Let's make one thing clear. You will not be in this city if you shoot a police officer, rape a girl, commit a crime, commit violence and we are not going to be a safe haven for those who believe they're going to exploit our American dream," said Adams, who also hinted at wanting to get rid of the city's sanctuary status.
The NYC mayor has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration's approach to immigration, as well as New York's sanctuary city laws. City officials currently are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration and law enforcement officials to deport undocumented migrants.
However, Homan said in a radio interview on Tuesday that he wants Adams to direct NYPD to tip off federal forces about the location of undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes. "I'm hoping we come to an agreement where his officers will help my officers remove these public safety threats, especially Tren de Aragua and the other alien gangs that are creating havoc in New York," Homan said.
Adams administration spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak said the goal has always been to work alongside its federal counterpart, not "war with them." "We will continue to explore all lawful processes to remove violent migrants from our city. We hope to increase collaboration across law enforcement agencies to ensure we are working together to prevent violent gang activity," she said.
Homan's discontent comes as President Trump is reportedly frustrated with the current pace of deportations. In fact, two top Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials were demoted this week in this context.
The shakeup comes after Trump reportedly told aides that the current pace of deportations is "too f---ing low," according to NewsNation. The outlet quoted an aide saying that even though border czar Tom Homan and ICE are "doing a great job," they "have got to do more." Trump also said on Sunday that he supported Homan's work. The outlet detailed that ICE averaged 787 arrests per day in the last week of January.
