Bord Gais musical Anything Goes bright, brilliant and utterly breathtaking

Anything Goes had its opening night at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre last night and it was truly bright, brilliant and utterly breathtaking.

The multi award-winning musical has sailed into Dublin starring multi-award-winner Kerry Ellis (Wicked/We Will Rock You) as Reno Sweeney and Olivier Award Winner Denis Lawson (Bleak House/Star Wars) as Moonface Martin.

Joining them is Olivier Award Winner Simon Callow (Art/Death in Paradise) as Elisha Whitney and Musical Theatre Royalty Bonnie Langford (EastEnders/9 to 5) as Evangeline Harcourt.

Bonnie previously told Dublin Live: “It’s the absolute tonic that we need at this time when everything is so dark, gloomy and sad. You can switch off the news and come see the show.

“We’ll pay the electricity, stay here and you don’t even have to boil the kettle, you can have a nice drink during the interval and switch off and we guarantee you’ll go home feeling much better.”

The Westend queen was absolutely right as the S.S American transported us back to 1939, a time where we didn’t have TV’s, phones or social media to bring us the bad news we have been bombarded with.

But it wasn’t not smooth sailing when they head out to sea; etiquette is cast off through the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to find true love.

Their journey proves that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing and dancing sailors, a comical disguise, a farcical blackmail, delightful double-entendres, and some timeless good fun.

Featuring a joyful, gold-plated score of theatre’s most memorable standards, including ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, ‘You’re the Top’, ‘It’s De- Lovely!’ and 'Anything Goes', it’s everything you want a big Broadway musical to be and more.

It was definitely no surprise that the audience were on their feet on opening night.

The spectacular show had much energy, high spirits and pure enjoyment.

If the audience had the chance, they’d put on their armbands and try to get onboard themselves.

It was simple and clean, but also glitzy and glamorous.

The traditional romantic tale didn’t forget the drama and comedy either, with the audience cackling out loud throughout, it was hard not to.

The hit show continues at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre until May 28, 2022.
