Boozed-up Johnstone man sent vile messages to new girlfriend after drunk row

A drunk Johnstone man ruined his fledgling relationship after sending abusive WhatsApp messages to his girlfriend calling her a “fat spotty c**t.”

Brian Winkler, 33, had been seeing Caitlin Jowett for a mere three months when he got drunk and turned abusive towards
her.

Winkler, of Graham Street, had been drinking with Ms Jowett’s family when things turned sour, with him telling her to “go die” – which ultimately resulted in the end of their relationship.

Procurator fiscal depute Laura Willcox told Paisley Sheriff Court: “Around 4pm, the accused and Ms Jowett where at her parents’ house.

“She wasn’t drinking as she was driving, but the accused was.

“As Winkler was becoming intoxicated, his demeanour changed.

“He wasn’t abusive at this time but around 9.30pm when both the accused and Ms Jowett were at her sister’s house in Bridge of Weir, he became argumentative for around two hours.

“At 11.15pm the accused was asked to leave and he left the property on Loch Road and stood outside and during the course of being outside, Ms Jowett received WhatsApp messages from the accused.

“These messages were abusive and threatening with one stating, ‘Enjoy cheat life ya fat c**t.’

“And others stating, ‘Fat spotty c**t.’ ‘You fat ugly c**t go die.’

“The police were contacted by the complainer and they attended the following day for a statement and they traced the accused.

“He was arrested, cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Ms Willcox explained the relationship ended following this incident and that her views on a non-harassment order where to be considered upon
sentencing.

Defence mitigation was reserved by Mr Lynch for the preparation of background reports.

Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill said: “Given the nature of the charge you plead guilty to and your previous conviction of assault to injury in 2007, I will defer sentence for reports.”

Sheriff Gill called for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment.

Winkle was granted bail with a condition not to contact
Ms Jowett.

He will return to court on October 13 for sentencing.

Consideration of a non-harassment order was continued until the same date.
