Procurator fiscal depute, Jason Stark told Paisley Sheriff Court on Thursday: “Around 7pm on May 1 Pauline Stevens was within her home with the accused and a friend.

“The accused became increasingly intoxicated and at 2.15am, which is now May 2, Ms Stevens asked the accused and the friend to leave and both did.

“Around 3.30am Ms Stevens entered the kitchen and noticed the accused had returned and was on the veranda.

“She then asked the accused to go sleep on the couch and she returned upstairs.

“Two minutes later he went to the bedroom and punched her head while she lay in bed.

“She scrambled away and he then threw a pram at her, striking her on the head.

“Ms Stevens then went to the kitchen and contacted the police, but the accused followed her and threw various objects at her - including drinking glasses - while she was on the phone.

“He then made off but was traced by police, arrested and taken to Clydebank police station where he was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Defence agent Mr Keenan told the court that Stevens was released from police on an undertaking with conditions not to enter the Johnstone property.

Mr Keenan explained that the couple normally live together and that they have a four-year-old son.

Sheriff Lindsay Kooner stated reports would be necessary in this case and deferred sentencing for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report.

Stevens, of Inverkip Road in Greenock, will return to court for sentencing on June 17.

Consideration of a non-harassment order will also be decided at the next hearing.
