Boots cuts loyalty points earned per pound in Advantage Card shake-up

Boots is cutting the points earned per pound on its loyalty card - but said it would offer more discounts on its own-brand products.

The health and beauty giant said that members of its Boots Advantage Card would earn 3p worth of points for every £1 spent, instead of 4p.

The retailer said this was in response to customer feedback that they wanted to access “instant savings”.

In a statement on its website, the High Street chain said: “We understand that more customers are looking to access instant savings, so offering 10% off our Boots own brand range will give even more opportunities to save.

“We understand that many customers still love saving up their points for big purchases in the future, so will continue to offer 3p worth of points for every £1 spent at Boots.”

The change comes as retailers’ costs soar because of rises in energy bills and other overheads.

One retail analyst said schemes where customers collect points to use at a later date are losing their appeal versus more immediate savings amid the cost-of-living crisis.

“Loyalty schemes where shoppers collect points to use later are losing appeal as shoppers want the best price and discount right now, and the cost of running these schemes is also significant," analyst Catherine Shuttleworth told the BBC.

Under the change, over 6,000 own-brand Boots products will be eligible for the ten per cent discount, which begins from May.

The retailer said students would continue to receive a ten per cent discount in store, alongside the extra ten per cent for Boots branded products.
