Boost for cyclists and public transport users in Renfrewshire as £1.5m earmarked for sustainable projects

Cyclists and public transport users are set to benefit from almost £1.5 million worth of improvements in Renfrewshire.

Six projects in the local authority will land a cash boost as works are planned to enhance sustainable travel infrastructure.

The £1.485m funding allocated to the council forms part of regional transport authority Strathclyde Partnership for Transport’s (SPT) investment in the area.

The money includes £180,000 for Linburn bus turning loop, £55,000 for Milliken Park station connections and £550,000 for the Paisley to Renfrew cycle route.

Additionally, £200,000 has been set aside for pedestrian crossing installations, £200,000 for bus corridor improvements and £300,000 for traffic management measures.

Stephen Dornan, chair of SPT, said: “Despite challenging financial pressures, we are making transport in our area greener, more connected, and more reliable and accessible to all.

“Our investment programme will ensure communities, residents and businesses across Renfrewshire can share in the benefits of improved public transport and active travel.

“We are proud to announce this funding and look forward to working with the local authority and others to progress these projects and deliver transport improvements across the region.”

Councillor Michelle Campbell, the council’s convener of the infrastructure, land and environment policy board, believes the funding will enhance public transport and active travel options and boost road safety in the area.

She said: “I’m pleased to see this significant investment coming into Renfrewshire, which will improve the availability of sustainable travel infrastructure in the area.

“We’re committed to providing people with the option to travel actively throughout Renfrewshire and this investment will improve public transport options, enhance the safety of our roads network and support the new walking and cycling route between Paisley and Renfrew.

“I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition for the benefit of local people in Renfrewshire.”

The funding is part of a wider £14.5m of grant investment for transport upgrades across the Strathclyde region this year.
