THE number of people travelling to Inverness by train has shot up by almost 70 per cent since the hit BBC show The Traitors began, according to a leading rail company.
Trainline said that its analysis of booking systems showed a 25% increase in the number of tickets sold to Inverness year-on-year after the show’s first season, which was shown in late 2022.
After its second season, which premiered in January 2024, the pattern continued.
Trainline said it saw a 35% increase in bookings year-on-year after the conclusion of the second series.
In total, the firm reported that it had seen a 69% rise in the number of bookings to Inverness since The Traitors began.
The series is filmed at Ardross Castle, which is around 30 miles north of Inverness, Scotland’s most northerly city and the "capital of the Highlands".
The BBC reported in January 2024 that every episode of the second series had seen viewership figures of upwards of six million people.
Sakshi Anand, the president of Trainline UK, said: “Inverness and the Scottish Highlands are a fantastic place to visit, with stunning scenery and plenty to do, we certainly expect travellers to remain faithful to visiting the location once series three concludes.
“If the drama of this season – yes Linda we are thinking of you – has piqued your interest, now is the time to hop on Trainline and get your tickets booked.
“As we head towards the thrilling final, faithful or traitor aside, the real winners will be the train-tors this year!”
The show has come under scrutiny in its third season after allegations that, despite being considered as a Scottish show for the purpose of hitting BBC commissioning targets, most of its staff are based in London.
