Bookies' verdict on Jesse Marsch's 2022-23 prospects as Leeds United rival heads sack race odds

Jesse Marsch endured a very stressful first twelve fixtures as Leeds United head coach, as the club came almost as close as they possibly could have come to relegation without dropping back into the Championship. Survival on the final day - as Leeds beat Brentford 2-1 and Burnley lost to Newcastle - meant that Marsch had done the job he was brought in to do, in keeping the club in the Premier League.

However, bookmakers Betfair, have made the Leeds boss one of the favourites to be sacked first in the Premier League. The American has been given odds of 6/1, with only Southampton's Ralph Hassenhuttl and Everton's Frank Lampard at 9/2 and 7/2 respectively.

Given the way Southampton finished the season, winning only once in their last 12 fixtures, Hassenhuttl will start the new season immediately under pressure. Meanwhile, Lampard is in a similar situation to Marsch at Leeds, where Everton survived after their penultimate fixture but cannot afford another season scrambling at the bottom end of the table.

However, unlike Leeds - who have been active in the transfer window thus far - Everton have yet to make many improvements to their squad, as they appear to need a big sale before they can make the kind of improvements to their team which Lampard may require.

After the 2022/23 fixtures were released yesterday, Marsch will be hopeful of a good start to the season. That would take some early pressure off him and allow Leeds to think positively about moving forwards once again.
