Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Sandra Duffy, joined leaders across the world in paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

She said: "It is with deep regret that I have learned of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II today.

"I wish to send my sincerest condolences and sympathies to the Queen's family at this sad and difficult time.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the many people in our city and district, especially people from the unionist tradition and the people of Britain, who will feel her loss deeply.

"I would like to also acknowledge the contribution Queen Elizabeth made towards building the peace here, reaching out the hand and helping to advance reconciliation and build relationships. I am hopeful that this will be a lasting legacy.

"I will open a Book of Condolence at the Guildhall to allow people to offer their sympathies to her family at this time."

DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton has closed his office today which will also remain closed on Monday September 12 as a 'mark of respect' to the Queen's passing.

In a tribute, he said: "Thank you ma'am."

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin said: "Many people across these islands will be deeply saddened this evening. My thoughts are with the Queen’s family at this time of loss.

"Whatever your opinions of the monarchy, hers was a life marked by duty and commitment to service."

UUP Councillor Ryan McCready said: "I have spoken with the Mayor and requested that all public buildings be lit up out of respect for the passing of The Queen, I will be given more information regarding this later.

"A book of condolence will be available in the Guildhall from 1pm for members of the public to sign and leave their messages.

"For those wishing to leave floral tributes, these can be laid at St Columb's Cathedral."
