Bonhill Veterans Bowling Club are extending a warm welcome to new members, as they mark their original green’s 100th anniversary.
The George Street club opened their green last Friday evening, marking the start of the club’s centenary season.
And president Donnie Ledgerwood outlined the rich history that members are proud to be a part of.
He said: “The land which is used by the Veterans’ Bowling Club was originally owned by a Mr George Sutherland and used by a joinery and wood merchant. But in 1923 the land was being used as a bowling green by Bonhill South U.F. Church Bowling Club.
On May 12, 1928 there was a report in the Lennox Herald of the club opening their green in glorious weather and the customary game between president and vice-president resulted in a win for the President’s team by eight shots.
“It is also possible at that time that the Bonhill and Jamestown and also Bonhill Veterans Bowling Club were formed as there are in the clubhouse various trophies with the first winners being ‘Strathleven’ in 1927.
“The club was still going at the start of the Second World War in 1939 and the land was owned by a Mr James Bryson.
“We are a bit unsure if the club continued to flourish during the war years and just after, however in 1952 the Vale of Leven District council looked at turfing the green and also obtaining a hut for the ‘new’ green.
“This hut was to be made into a ‘pavilion’ by the joiner according to the minutes of the council from July 7, 1953.
“The green was to be officially opened by the council in 1954 when the playing season started. This clubhouse remained until the new one was built probably around the 1970s and has the mural which can be seen today.
“The club held a 50 year anniversary celebration in 2004 to commemorate the official opening of the green in 1954.”
One hundred years on from the first action, the club is continuing to go from strength-to-strength - with new members always welcome, and plans to mark 100 years with a gala day this summer.
Donnie explained: “Bonhill Veterans Bowling club is still a very active club today and it is the intention to have a centenary of the original green on July 15 this year, which we hope will be well supported.
“The club is also extremely appreciative of all the work and maintenance that is performed all year by West Dunbartonshire Council, keeping our green and clubhouse in great shape.
“We must also say thanks to all the local businesses that have and continue to support the club over the years.
“The club is always looking for new members whatever their ability. Their purpose is not just to promote the game of bowls but also to encourage friendship, companionship and light fitness for the older population of the area.
“All you need is a pair of flat shoes as all other equipment is provided. Even if you don’t want to play, you can come along and enjoy a cup of tea, a biscuit and a blether.”
