Bonfire ‘warzone’ as petrol bombs and fireworks hurled at police across UK cities

Rampaging yobs wreaked Bonfire Night havoc across UK cities as police were pelted with petrol bombs, fireworks, bricks and bottles.

In eastManchester, chaos ensued when a large of youths set a car alight and started an illegal bonfire with waste turning the area into a “warzone” on Tuesday evening.

Three males aged 16 to 18 were detained on suspicion of causing violent disorder in the Vine Street area of Gorton at 4.15pm. Greater Manchester Police warned “further arrests will follow”.

In a social media post, one local said: “Looks like a full scale warzone down there.”

Superintendent Richard McNamara said: “Police patrols were quickly deployed within minutes of the report being made to us.

“The incident quickly dealt with and targeted arrests made to stop escalation.

“I want to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident.”

Separately, petrol bombs and missiles were also thrown at riot police gathered on housing estates in Edinburgh.

Officers with shields and batons faced down gangs in Gracemount, Moredun and Niddrie areas of the Scottish capital.

One police officer was injured after a brick was thrown through the window of her patrol car.

There was a tense stand-off as person was bundled to the ground.

Some innocent bystanders were also caught up in the mayhem as thugs launched bricks at police and set fire to more wheelie bins.

Scottish Secretary Ian Murray, MP for Edinburgh South, described the scenes in Gilmerton as “disgraceful and unacceptable”.

Police Scotland officers were given stop and search powers to deal with firework-related anti-social behaviour.

A police helicopter was also brought in to assist with the operation.

Elsewhere, a car was hit by a firework in Pollokshields in Glasgow and a 25-year-old man was arrested.

On Bonfire Night last year, about 100 young people clashed with riot police with fireworks and petrol bombs being thrown directly at officers in Sighthill and Southhouse, Edinburgh. Police also responded to disturbances in Glasgow and Dundee.
