Emergency services, including a bomb squad, remain on the scene of a large-scale incident in Glasgow after residents were evacuated this morning.
Police were called to Petershill Road in Springburn shortly after 10am on Monday after reports of a device within a property. Bomb disposal experts, dressed in camouflage gear, can be seen on the street alongside uniformed police officers and members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).
A cordon has been established and residents were ordered to leave their homes following reports of a suspicious package in a flat in the street. The eastern area of Petershill Road, and adjacent Red Road, have been closed to the public.
Officers have arrested a 50-year-old man in connection with the incident. In the meantime, emergency services remain on site. The MoD has been contacted for comment.
Huge teams of firefighters, supporting explosive ordnance experts, are pictured on the scene, along with a Scottish Ambulance Service incident support vehicle. An SFRS spokesperson confirmed that firefighters were still on the scene as of 5.30pm.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police and emergency services are currently in attendance at an incident in Petershill Road, Springburn, Glasgow. Officers were called around 10.05 am this morning, Monday, April 17 to a report of a suspect device within a flat in the street.
"The EOD - Explosive Ordnance Disposal - is in attendance. As a precaution, a number of flats have been evacuated and some road closures have been implemented. People are advised at this time to heed local diversions or seek alternative routes.”
The incident is the second to rattle residents of Springburn in recent days. A murder investigation is underway after Thomas Bowers, 33, was found dead in Auchinloch Street, just off Petershill Road, on Friday.
Police are investigating whether his death, at around 5am on April 14, is linked with a car fire in Gadie Street two miles away an hour later. A police spokesperson said: "Officers are keeping an open mind as this progresses and are considering possible links between the two incidents."
