The lad says the rusty thing he picked up while "out and about" in Nitshill the night before turned out to be an old artillery shell and it was removed by an explosive ordnance disposal team.

The scene was cleared around 2.15pm after it was removed.

Speaking to Glasgow Live , the lad said: "I found an artillery shell in Nitshill, just around the corner from my house.

"Police said they didn't want to risk it and we all had to get out."

The boys mum shared more insight into what sparked the full-scale operation: "He was out last night and brought this old rusty thing home, I never thought much of it till this morning.

"It had a dome type shape and after police arrived we were told we had to evacuate, that's when we had to go up to the school and they've been in my house since 10am this morning."

The boy had to then show emergency crew where he exactly found the old artillery shell, which he came across in Nitshill while "out and about" the previous night.

The Naval Base at Faslane was contacted and the item was quickly removed.

She added: "At first, I was sitting with police until a couple hours later we were told we had to leave."

Nearby residents were understandably confused, with one saying they "thought the worst."

One pointed out: "I have never seen so many police, fire brigades, emergency crew, not in my whole entire life have I ever seen so many."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland has said: "Househillmuir Road in the Pollok area of Glasgow has re-opened following an earlier report of a possible ordnance item being found.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended and the item was removed. There is no ongoing risk to the public.

"Residents have been advised they can return to their properties and officers will remain in the area this afternoon. Thank you for your co-operation."
