Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt on Sheffield Wednesday draw and makes offside claim on Owls goal

Bolton Wanderers came from behind once again to claim a point versus play-offs chasing Sheffield Wednesday.

Wanderers went behind after the break when the Owls took the lead through Harlee Dean's header from Barry Bannan's corner came off the post and Jordan Storey was on hand to tap home.

But Bolton equalised before full-time when Aaron Morley's corner was only half cleared and MJ Williams fires home through a crowded penalty area to ensure Wanderers would get a share of the spoils.

Wanderers now sit 10th in the table after the draw after Portsmouth suffered defeat to Cheltenham Town, while Wednesday remain in the top six but only on goal difference along with Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers.

After the game, Bolton boss Ian Evatt spoke to the press and here's his immediate reaction to the point.

What did you make of it?

“Considering the games we’ve had this week, I think considering the injuries we’ve had and the illness we’ve had, we’ve done remarkably well to get something out of the game.

“They’re clearly desperate to win, I think all the teams we’ve played this week have had something to play for. Portsmouth with the games in hand could have nicked in there and obviously Wigan with where they’re at and Sheffield Wednesday are fighting for those play-offs.

“With the injuries we’ve had, it’s been a really challenging week and we’ve had to change shape a little bit today and go back to a four.

"First half there were some positive signs, I think they started well but all of their attacks were from our looseness in possession and a bit unreliable at times. We lacked a bit of quality and then arguably we had the biggest chance with Jon, he has to score, it’s a wonderfully worked set play just before half-time.

"He knows he should score and after that second half, they’re throwing everything at us and then it was a set play but it was offside which is annoying and frustrating.”

Is that why you were speaking to the referee at the end?

“Yeah because they have to know the rules and the rules are that if the goalkeeper is out of goal and there’s only one covering defender or one player then he’s clearly offside and their player who puts it in on the line was behind the keeper so he’s clearly offside and they have to know that, which is disappointing.

“These lads never know when they’re beat and it’s never a bad habit to get into to score so many late goals and I think if you look at our record from when I’ve taken over, the amount of goals we score late, it’s fantastic and credit to them, they rallied and got something out of the game.”

In the last week you’ve played teams associated with play-offs and promotion - what have you learned?

“I’ve learned that we’re competitive. I think we now know that we are competitive but we don’t just want to be competitive. It’s how we get ahead of these teams and honestly, we’ve still got work to do.

"Yes, we’ve come a long way and I do think now we are real competitive against these teams but I think for us to really go again we need to learn, we need to improve and obviously we’ve got another window coming up where we can strengthen again. Positive signs but still work to do.”

There were some suggestions Kachunga was upended in the build-up to their goal, did you see that?

“No I didn’t but it was mostly the offside that annoyed me because these big decisions in big games you can’t get wrong and I just felt like we were on the rough end of a few decisions today, but it is what it is. The players never know where they’re beat and they rallied and they got something out of it.”

Did you get any explanation from the officials at that point?

“The linesman thought there was two players behind the goalkeeper. There was but it was one of theirs and one of ours.”
