Boiler expert reveals easy tweak to cut household gas bills by £99 a year

A boiler expert has revealed an easy tweak that could cut household gas bills by £99 a year.

Brits are seeking money saving measures amid the cost of living crisis which has seen energy prices reaching £2,500 this weekend.

Heating & Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC)'s Isaac Occhipinti says adjusting the flow temperature on the boiler could help to reduce usage by up to 8%.

Boilers are often set to heat water in a home's radiators by around 75-80C - but many properties will get warm enough with much lower heating flow temperatures.

50 to 60C is said to be more than enough.

The average house uses 12,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of gas a year, now capped at 10.3p per kWh.

That means the trick could save up to £99, with bigger homes likely to cut even more money off the bill.

The level of savings depends on outside temperature, house age and insulation, among other factors.

Mr Occhipinti, energy expert at the HHIC, told the Sun: “Heating bills are so high and we know people are looking for different ways to save.

Flow temperature on a combi boiler can be as low as 55-60C and still heat a home, say experts (PA)

“Most people know about turning their thermostat down to save money but changing the temperature flow of their boiler could also help.”

He added: “It’s impossible to give an absolute saving because the UK housing stock is so variable.”

It comes after former personal finance journalist Sophie Smith's own TikTok post about the same trick garnered millions of views.

In a short tutorial, she explains: "Turn your boiler's flow temperature down to 50C heating and 55C water.

""The settings for most boilers is too high. This simple step could save you money and your home will feel just as warm."

While many people commented saying how effective the hack is, some complained about the speed at which their homes heat up on the lower setting.

One user said: “My hot water is fine set at 48 but if I turn the central heating down the house doesn't warm up, can take about three hours to reach temp even at 80."

Another said: "The biggest savings are had by turning off preheat. If you turn the heating low the boiler will run longer for rooms to reach temperature. False economy."

While one suggested: "Turn the boiler off unless heating is needed. Hot water never makes it to the tap when washing hands. I only have it on if I know need hot water/heating in my home."

It should be noted that these tips are only safe to try if you have a combi boiler.

Hot water cylinder boilers are not appropriate for these hacks, as turning the temperature down on a hot water cylinder can cause Legionnaire's disease - a severe form of pneumonia caused by bacteria called legionella.
