'Boiled' eggs in an air-fryer - it is a thing and they are 'perfect'

The popularity of air-fryers needs no introduction or explanation, with their energy saving credentials top of buyers' lists. The variety of foods that can be cooked in the handy counter-top gadgets is also vast but a boiled egg! While we were sceptical at first, apparently this is a thing.

Initially highlighted by Nottinghamshire Live sister publication Daily Record after seeing a post from a lifestyle expert, we decided to have a look around and, yes, there are 'recipes' online for boiled eggs in an air-fryer. What's more, people say they the results are 'perfect'.

With this unconventional method of creating a 'boiled' egg, you can load up your air-fryer and cook them in a batch. There's no water involved but there is a word of warning to adhere to.

According to one recipe that we found online at website Cook at Home Mom, you can achieve hard or soft boiled eggs in minutes. The recipes website tells followers to first set the air fryer to a low temperature. After this "add your eggs to the air fryer basket or rack".

Laura, the website creator, says: "As best you can, leave space between each egg. It’s normal if they roll a bit, but this allows the air to circulate properly. Place the basket back into the air fryer and cook."

She then give cooking times saying for a soft boiled egg: set the timer for 9-10 minutes, 'Jammy Eggs' 11-13 minutes and hard boiled eggs 14-15 minutes. After this she says the eggs should be plunged into ice and, when cool "but not yet chilled, remove them and peel".

Laura adds that the temperature of the air-fryer should be set to low advocating between 132 and 135C. Other people have recommended the low temperature to be anywhere between 120C and 150C. So, it could be trial and error on this one.

One person posting on All Recipes website had tried the method. All Recipes quotes at 120C temperature. They wrote: "I had doubts but followed the instructions exactly as stated. Eggs turned out amazing. Tried it again and added an additional minute. Second time they were even better. Love that I don't have to wait for water to boil."

Another said: "Perfect results! So easy! Don't think I'll ever make them in a pot again." Another cooking at 125C said: "Very Good. This was an experiment with just 1 medium sized egg. I (nearly) followed the instructions to the letter. The egg was taken out of the fridge... Cooked in 15 minutes."
