Bohemians launch new home kit with homage paid to late club legend Derek 'Mono' Monaghan

Bohemians have launched their new home kit for the 2023 season - and it features a tribute to the late club legend Derek 'Mono' Monaghan as well as a return to the club's traditional red and black stripes.

The new kit is inspired by the Auld Triangle, the famous song about Mountjoy Prison which is located just a stone's throw from Dalymount Park.

Having ventured for an alternative take on the club's colour code for 2022, the 2023 strip sees the return of the traditional red and black stripes.

And in a touching tribute to Derek 'Mono' Monaghan, the much-loved Bohs stalwart who passed away earlier this year, the kit also features a commemorative hem tag which is comprised of a star next to lettering spelling 'MONO'.

After passing suddenly in August of this year, an outpouring from all connected with Bohemian FC followed as tributes flooded in for a man who was connected to each and every person involved with the Phibsborough club as a result of his tireless presence and contribution around Dalymount Park.

Back then, club COO Daniel Lambert took to social media following his funeral to pay tribute to both the man himself as well as the send off he received from all connected to the club - including Johnny Logan, who sang at the service.

He said: "Mono got a send off that was testament to the love he put out there.

"A church that couldn’t hold half the crowd, flares, flags, Michael’s D’s aide de camp, hold me now sung by Jonny, & the entire Bohs family united by a special character that we’ll never see the likes of again."

While comedian PJ Gallagher echoed those sentiments, saying: "Bohs fans, there’s nothing like them.

"I’ve never seen anything like that send off for Mono today.

"The way the fans supported each other, the way Mono’s family spoke about him and the club, the way Johnny Logan sang.

"The people's club, the big club. RIP Mono."

In a club statement attached to the new kit launch, Bohs gave fans the lowdown on the new strip.

It read: "The jersey features a triangle motif based on the old triangle from Mountjoy, while John Francis Flynn’s rendition of The Auld Triangle, which is featured in the promotional ad for the new jersey, will be part of the Bohemian Way, a forthcoming Creative Climate Action project funded by Creative Ireland.

"Located a stone’s throw from Dalymount Park, Bohs’ links with Mountjoy have grown over the last decade with the club’s community outreach volunteers pioneering several comprehensive rehabilitation programmes in the prison.

"Finally, and in solidarity with the Monaghan family, our jersey features a commemorative hem tag in memory of club legend and our dearest of friends, Derek ‘Mono’ Monaghan, who tragically lost his life earlier this year.

"Our 2023 kit is once again designed in-house at Bohemian FC and manufactured by our kit suppliers O’Neill’s on the island of Ireland."
