Boeing is set to present its plan to federal regulators on Thursday outlining steps to address safety and quality issues that have plagued its aircraft manufacturing operations in recent years. This comes after a fuselage panel blowout incident on an Alaska Airlines flight in January, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to require Boeing to develop a turnaround plan.

The incident, which involved a Boeing 737 Max 9, raised concerns as investigators discovered missing bolts that led to the panel detaching from the aircraft. While no injuries were reported, the event has added to Boeing's challenges, including ongoing civil and criminal investigations.

Allegations from whistleblowers have surfaced, claiming that Boeing has compromised safety by taking shortcuts, a claim the company denies. An FAA panel also identified deficiencies in Boeing's safety culture.

FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker has given Boeing a 90-day deadline to enhance quality and address safety worries, emphasizing that this plan marks the beginning of a process to rebuild trust and ensure aircraft safety.

Boeing's production of the 737 Max has been restricted by the FAA, with analysts noting a further decline in output. The company faces potential legal repercussions related to previous incidents, including the 2018 and 2019 crashes involving the Max jetliners.

While most issues have centered around the 737 Max, Boeing and key supplier Spirit AeroSystems have encountered challenges with the 787 Dreamliner. The company's setbacks extend to other projects such as the Starliner space capsule, military tanker, and Air Force One jets.

Boeing is committed to rebuilding confidence among regulators and the public, aiming to regain its competitive edge against Airbus. Efforts to streamline production processes and enhance oversight of suppliers like Spirit AeroSystems are underway to address the root causes of recent setbacks.
