Bodyguard crowned TV Moment of the Year for gripping opening scenes beating Great British Bake Off and Love Island

Bodyguard’s nailbiting opening scene has won an award for TV Moment Of The Year, beating The Great British Bake Off and Love Island.

The first 20 minutes of the gripping drama, which went on to become the most successful BBC drama in years, featured Richard Madden's character David Budd try to prevent a terrorist attack on a commuter train.

A woman wearing an explosive vest and belt had boarded the London-bound train, with a view to detonation. Budd managed to talk her into surrendering.

Other contenders had included Rahul Mandal's win on The Great British Bake Off last month - which saw him beat Ruby Bhogal and Kim-Joy - and Jack Fincham's ex-girlfriend arriving on reality show Love Island during his stay in Casa Amor.

Victory: Rahul Mandal won The Great British Bake Off in October (Channel 4 / Love Productions)

But Love Island didn't leave empty handed as the fourth series of the summer show picked up the Reality Show title. The show, hosted by Caroline Flack, was won by Fincham and girlfriend Dyer.

The TV Moment Of The Year crown was awarded to Bodyguard in Heat magazine's Unmissables Awards, decided by a panel of industry experts.

Love Island: The ITV2 show was crowned winner in the Reality category (ITV)

Jed Mercurio, creator of the BBC One drama, which also starred Keeley Hawes, said "everyone involved is immensely grateful for the response to the series".
