Body recovered from River Lagan after reports of man and woman in the water

A man has died after an incident in the River Lagan in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to the Lagan Weir area of Belfast City Centre at around 2.20am on Friday, May 5, following reports of a man and woman in the water.

Officers were joined at the scene by other emergency services and the woman was recovered from the water and taken to hospital.

Sadly, a man's body was later recovered from the water. Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police attended a report of a man and woman in the water at around 2.20am this morning, Friday 5th May, in the Lagan Weir area of Belfast.

"Police and other emergency services responded and the woman was recovered from the water and taken to hospital.

"A man's body was later recovered from the water.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time."
