Body of man in his 40s found on derelict land in Ancoats close to the city centre

The body of a man was found on derelict land in Ancoats, close to the city centre on Sunday afternoon (September 18). The male, thought to be aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and crime scene investigators had been spotted at the site of the demolished Central Retail Park, off Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, shortly after 3.30pm on Sunday. Officers were seen stood at the entrance to the site, with forensics also present.

At around 6.30pm, a private ambulance arrived at the scene and a body, on a stretcher, was placed inside. Police have since confirmed that a male, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead but that it is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

Photos from the scene on Sunday show numerous police cars in attendance at the entrance to the closed-off site, with an ambulance and CSI van also parked up. Police had initially been called to concern for the welfare of the man before he was declared dead a short while later.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 3.35pm today (Sunday 18 September 2022), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a male on land off Great Ancoats Street, Manchester. Emergency services attended and he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

"The male is believed to be in his 40s and, though formal ID has not taken place, his next of kin has been informed. His death is not currently believed to be suspicious."
