Body in River Roch 'first spotted by person waiting at traffic lights'

A body in a river in Rochdale town centre was first spotted by a person waiting at a set of traffic lights, the Manchester Evening News understands.

The body was spotted in the River Roch near St Mary's Gate at around 6.30am this morning (Wednesday). Emergency services were then alerted.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the body was pulled from the water. No further details about the person have been confirmed at this stage.

Police and fire crews remain on the scene. St Mary's Gate remains shut both ways between Dane Street and College Road.

Traffic is building around the closure, with drivers urged to avoid the area if possible. A tweet posted by Transport for Greater Manchester said: "ROAD CLOSED. St Mary's Gate - Rochdale is closed between Dane St and College Rd in both directions.

"This is due to a Police Incident. Please seek an alternative route. Local bus services are on diversion."
