A man's body has been found near the Wimbledon tennis courts.
Police made the discovery in Chobham Gardens, Southfields at 9.25am this morning, around half a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
A statement to local media said the death was being treated as 'unexpected' and 'unexplained'.
Local reports said the body had initially been found by a rubbish collection worker from Wandsworth Council. One source told The Sun that he had seen a covered-over bin lorry at the scene before a yellow and white tent was erected nearby.
A forensic scene is now in place around the area.
A Metropolitan Police statement said: "Officers were called at 09:25hrs on Monday, 10 July to Chobham Gardens, SW19. The body of man was reported to have been found at the location.
"Officers have attended and a forensic scene is in place. The death is being treated as unexpected and unexplained."
It comes after a tragic car crash last week at The Study Prep School in Wimbledon left two children dead, with one woman in her 40s also left in a critical condition over the weekend. Police confirmed last night that eight-year-old Nuria Sajjad had lost her life as a result of injuries sustained in the horror collision on school grounds.
Children were having a tea party to mark the last day of term at the independent, fee-paying school. In a Met Police statement, Nuria's distraught family described the youngster as the "light of our lives".
"She embodied joy, kindness and generosity and she was loved by all around her," they added.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: "My heart goes out to the family of 8-year-old Nuria Sajjad and everyone affected by this tragic incident."
