There are fears that the body may have been there for over two decades.
Food found in the house was dated back to around 2001, leading investigators to believe the body had been there for over 20 years, The Irish Times reports.
Dental records will now be used to try and confirm the identity of the person who is believed to have been local.
Locals had thought this person moved to the UK, Cork Beo reports.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body in a house in Mallow, Co. Cork at approximately 12pm today 13th of January 2023.
"The scene has been preserved. Enquiries are ongoing."
