Body found during search for parents who vanished while kayaking in Mexico

Rescue crews have found a body in a search for two parents who vanished during a kayaking trip in Mexico on Thanksgiving.

Corey Allen and his wife Yeon-Su Kim from Flagstaff, Arizona, US, disappeared after they were blown off course by strong winds while taking part in the water sport with their 14-year-old daughter at around 1pm on November 24.

Following several days of searches around Playa Encanto beach, one body was discovered in the water approximately eight miles off the coast of Mayan Place at around 12.30pm on Sunday, Civil Protection and Firefighters in Puerto Peñasco said in a statement.

A secretary from navy told Mexican newspaper El Imparcial that the features on the body matched one of the two people missing, with a member of the Allen family confirming to authorities that it was Yeon-Su Kim.

The search for Mr Allen's body continues.

Volunteer rescue co-ordinator Tavane McCombs said the incident unfolded when the father took his daughter back to their rented home after becoming concerned by the adverse conditions and extreme reverse tide, which can cause large fluctuations in the shoreline level.

He then returned back to the water to find his wife, with his daughter reporting them missing later in the day after they both failed to turn up back at shore.

Back in their hometown of Flagstaff, family friend Lisa Aumack has started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the rescue effort, which had raised $63,553 (£52,800) raised of a $100,000 (£83,000) goal as of Sunday evening.

An update posted on the page the day before the mum was found said they would be "mobilising all possible air search resources today and tomorrow" after reaching the initial amount needed, with further donations going to "support Corey and Yeon-Su's children."

Yeon-Su Kim was a professor at Northern Arizona University, while Corey Allen works as an estate agent.

They are reported to have another child at home in addition to their teenage daughter, who is currently being looked after by relatives who have travelled to Mexico since her parents went missing.

Their disappearance has sparked a strong reaction among local people, with local businesswoman Ms McCombs using their command of both English and Spanish to help co-ordinate rescue efforts and pass information back to the United States.

Describing the response from the authorities, she told US media: "We had the Navy, the Marines, the police, panga boats, which is our local fishermen, looking for these people

"The outpour has been tremendous, just absolutely tremendous."
