One person is dead and another is in hospital after a fire destroyed a home in a tiny Tasmanian town.

Police and emergency services were called to the fire in Sidmouth about 8.20am on Sunday.

"The house and outbuildings were fully engulfed by fire when police and Tasmania Fire Service crews arrived and a person's body was located inside," a police spokesman said.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased."

The body is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be that of a man who lived at the house.

A woman who lived at the house was taken to the Launceston General Hospital for treatment and is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
