Bobby Wagner clarifies comments about Russell Wilson’s pre-trade recruiting

We knew quarterback Russell Wilson had been trying to recruit Bobby Wagner to the Denver Broncos, we just didn’t know how early that recruitment started.

In an interview with Rich Eisen on Wednesday, Wagner seemingly indicated that Wilson spoke to him about potentially going to the Broncos before the trade was even official.

“I knew about it,” Wagner said when Eisen asked him if he had a heads up on the Wilson trade. “The funny thing was, he actually called me a few days before, maybe even a week before [the trade] and asked me what was my thoughts about going there. I was like, ‘I don’t have any thoughts, my heart is in Seattle.'”

After those comments went viral, Wagner took to Twitter later in the day for what appeared to be some damage control.

“To clarify — Russ wasn’t recruiting me, just two close friends talking,” Wagner tweeted. “We both talking about wanting to stay in Seattle. Just didn’t happen that way.”

Wilson shared a similar statement.

Unfortunately for Wagner, his desire to remain with the Seahawks was unfulfilled as Seattle cut him just one day after agreeing to trade Wilson. Wagner later signed with the Los Angeles Rams as a free agent.

The Rams and Seahawks are both among Denver’s opponents this year, so Wilson will face his former teammate and his ex-team in 2022.
