Bob Mortimer gives health update after secretly being admitted to hospital

Bob Mortimer is back on the mend following his secret hospital dash over the weekend.

The much-loved comedian, 63, opened up about his health while appearing on Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast earlier this week - admitting he's "not very healthy at the moment" and revealing he had been taken to hospital over the weekend following a health scare.

Bob explained: "I am not very well. I am not very healthy at the moment." The comic - who had triple heart bypass surgery in 2015 - went on to discuss ending up in hospital recently, after working on a fishing show last week for two and half days before finding himself needing some medical assistance on the Saturday.

"Just heard that Bob Mortimer is unwell," one fan wrote on Twitter as Bob's health scare was made public. "I think this has affected me more than the passing of the Queen. Like her I do not know Bob but his ‘fishing documentary’ with Paul is pure joy. A man who brings genuine joy and may it long continue. Mirthmiester!"

Thankfully, it seems we can expect plenty more adventures from Bob, as it's confirmed the Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing star is doing just fine following his dash to the hospital and is even back catching some fish.

Speaking to the Mirror earlier today [September 28], a representative for Bob said: "Bob was unwell last week but after a very brief assessment in hospital, we're pleased to report that he's fine and back fishing!"

Many fans took to social media to send their love to the popular Would I Lie to You? star yesterday, with many sharing worried tweets like: "please christ don’t let anything happen to bob mortimer."

The audience at Leicester Square Theatre on Monday night [September 26] heard how Bob had been working on a fishing show last week which involved two and half days of filming, which he said ended on Thursday.

As reported by the Sun, he said: "I did it Tuesday, Wednesday and half of Thursday and I was in hospital on the Saturday. I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that should I? It's a real downer."

Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing premiered on the BBC in 2018, and sees Bob reunite with his long-time comedy partner Paul Whitehouse as they share their life experiences while fishing.

Bob - who has been open about having experienced heart problems - is said to have also discussed having rheumatoid arthritis during the podcast appearance.

According to the outlet, Bob explained he had initially been diagnosed with the condition forty years ago and said it returned recently after decades without it.

The former Shooting Stars co-host said he had been free of the condition - which causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints - since he was in his thirties but it came back earlier this month.

"In my mid-twenties I got struck down with rheumatoid arthritis. I just woke up and it was like, 'Bang'," he told the podcast.

"I have been free of it since I have been 34 and it came back 10 days ago. It is really sad for me to know whether it will go. Yes, I might be fat, but actually I am on steroids… it takes until you are 60 to realise all the things you could have done… at my age we all feel 47 but then your body packs in."
