It was n this day back in 1963 that the fans of the Boston Celtics said farewell to Holy Cross alum and Celtics legend Bob Cousy as a player for the storied franchise. Cousy, who helped propel Boston to its earlier titles as the so-called “Houdini of the Hardwood” as Boston’s elite floor general and one of the first true stars of the still-young league, decided to go out on a positive note that season after winning his sixth and final title with Boston.
To celebrate his career and its contributions to the Celtics organization, the New Yorker was feted at the old Boston Garden for what was billed as “Bob Cousy night” that had the man of honor give a speech that became famous for his inability to finish as he was overcome with emotion.
