Boats grounded in Byker as St Peter's Marina water level plummets

St Peter's Marina in Byker was seen to be empty of water this morning.

Said to be one of the safest and most sheltered marinas in the UK, the tidal marina can usually be accessed three hours either side of high water via passing under a bascule bridge and out into the River Tyne.

However, on Saturday morning boats were seen sitting up on silt with the waterline in the marina far below its usual level.

Usually, the lowest water level would sit at around three metres but this morning, the depth was far below that. It is the second time the marina has been empty in as many months, with boats left grounded in August too.

Following that incident last month, boat owners contacted ChronicleLive to express their concern that their boats could have been damaged.

Chronicle Live understands that the water level in August was low due to a fault with the sluice gate after maintenance work on the bascule bridge and that engineers were sent to fix the problem.

However, after ChronicleLive contacted the Marina on this occasion, they declined to give comment as to why the water level was low.
